Introduction

Garden of Eden - God’s household.
Created the world
Created the garden
Created the man
Created the woman
New Jerusalem
Will recreate the world
Will recreates New Jerusalem
Will recreate the people
Will recreate the relationship- Revelation 21:7
Revelation 21:7 NASB95
7 “He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.
Proverbs 14:1 NASB95
1 The wise woman builds her house, But the foolish tears it down with her own hands.
Proverbs 14:1 BHW 4.18
The wise woman is epitomised in Proverbs 31:10-31
Proverbs 31:10–31 NASB95
10 An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels. 11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, And he will have no lack of gain. 12 She does him good and not evil All the days of her life. 13 She looks for wool and flax And works with her hands in delight. 14 She is like merchant ships; She brings her food from afar. 15 She rises also while it is still night And gives food to her household And portions to her maidens. 16 She considers a field and buys it; From her earnings she plants a vineyard. 17 She girds herself with strength And makes her arms strong. 18 She senses that her gain is good; Her lamp does not go out at night. 19 She stretches out her hands to the distaff, And her hands grasp the spindle. 20 She extends her hand to the poor, And she stretches out her hands to the needy. 21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household, For all her household are clothed with scarlet. 22 She makes coverings for herself; Her clothing is fine linen and purple. 23 Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits among the elders of the land. 24 She makes linen garments and sells them, And supplies belts to the tradesmen. 25 Strength and dignity are her clothing, And she smiles at the future. 26 She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. 27 She looks well to the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness. 28 Her children rise up and bless her; Her husband also, and he praises her, saying: 29 “Many daughters have done nobly, But you excel them all.” 30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. 31 Give her the product of her hands, And let her works praise her in the gates.
But what does all of this mean?
Is it supposed to be like the 1950’s?
Was that the epitomy of womanhood?
4 Questions:
What is a household?
Genesis 7:1 NASB95
1 Then the Lord said to Noah, “Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be righteous before Me in this time.
The idea is that of the people and relationships therein.
OT - 1,700 times = a covering for people, usually referred to as household of the male who began that family.
Genesis 12:17 NASB95
17 But the Lord struck Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.
Genesis 18:19 NASB95
19 “For I have chosen him, so that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring upon Abraham what He has spoken about him.”
Genesis 24:27–28 NASB95
27 He said, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken His lovingkindness and His truth toward my master; as for me, the Lord has guided me in the way to the house of my master’s brothers.” 28 Then the girl ran and told her mother’s household about these things.
The emphasis in Proverbs 14 is not the physical structure, but the goods and people within the structure (Tent, brick house, mud house, wood house).
A woman was considered the keeper of that dwelling so that people who live there would be able to have their needs met: food, clothing, hygiene, medical, training, discipline, education, etc…
What is a wise woman and how does she build?
Proverbs 1:7 NASB95
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.
A wise woman is one whose focus is on wisdom.
She is a woman who has a keen interest on the value of being able to discern good and evil.
This is the woman who builds a house.
“builds” =
Proverbs 9:1 NASB95
1 Wisdom has built her house, She has hewn out her seven pillars;
Proverbs 24:3 NASB95
3 By wisdom a house is built, And by understanding it is established;
Proverbs 24:27 NASB95
27 Prepare your work outside And make it ready for yourself in the field; Afterwards, then, build your house.
The idea is that of the establishment of it, the longevity of the household.
Remember, the focal point is relationships.
Those relationships are to endure.
What is a foolish woman and how does she destroy?
One who lacks instruction - Proverbs 5:23
Proverbs 5:23 NASB95
23 He will die for lack of instruction, And in the greatness of his folly he will go astray.
One who is quick-tempered - Proverbs 14:17
Proverbs 14:17 NASB95
17 A quick-tempered man acts foolishly, And a man of evil devices is hated.
One who speaks foolishly - Proverbs 15:2
Proverbs 15:2 NASB95
2 The tongue of the wise makes knowledge acceptable, But the mouth of fools spouts folly.
What about today?
1 Timothy 2:9–15 NASB95
9 Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, 10 but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness. 11 A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. 12 But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. 13 For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. 14 And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. 15 But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.
1 Timothy 5:9–10 NASB95
9 A widow is to be put on the list only if she is not less than sixty years old, having been the wife of one man, 10 having a reputation for good works; and if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the saints’ feet, if she has assisted those in distress, and if she has devoted herself to every good work.
1 Timothy 5:11–16 NASB95
11 But refuse to put younger widows on the list, for when they feel sensual desires in disregard of Christ, they want to get married, 12 thus incurring condemnation, because they have set aside their previous pledge. 13 At the same time they also learn to be idle, as they go around from house to house; and not merely idle, but also gossips and busybodies, talking about things not proper to mention. 14 Therefore, I want younger widows to get married, bear children, keep house, and give the enemy no occasion for reproach; 15 for some have already turned aside to follow Satan. 16 If any woman who is a believer has dependent widows, she must assist them and the church must not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are widows indeed.
Titus 2:4–5 NASB95
4 so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.
