THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM April 24, 2022 THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM Matthew 16:13–19 (NIV) — 13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” 14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM Jesus Has The Keys To The Kingdom Of Heaven It Is Within His Authority To Open And Shut The Kingdom With These Keys THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM A FAVORITE TOPIC OF JESUS: THE KINGDOM OF GOD •Matthew 3:2 (NIV) — 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” •Matthew 4:17 (NIV) — 17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM •Matthew 5:3 (NIV) — 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. •Matthew 5:10 (NIV) — 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM •Matthew 6:10 (NIV) — 10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. •Matthew 6:33 (NIV) — 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM • Matthew 24:14 (NIV) — 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM •John 18:36 (NIV) — 36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place.” •Revelation 11:15 (NIV) — 15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever.” THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM CHRIST’S MESSAGE FOCUSED ON THE KINGDOM OF GOD • Matthew 4:23 (NIV) — 23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. • “The Kingdom Of God” = “The Kingdom Of Heaven.” THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM • “Jesus proclaimed the kingdom of God as an event taking place in His own person and mission because He brought God’s rule, reign, and dominion to earth.” • His Kingdom Was Not A Kingdom Of Political Or Military Might But A Kingdom Of Spiritual Power That Would Ultimately Triumph, Rule & Reign THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM OUR KING AND HIS KINGDOM •JESUS CHRIST WAS BORN A KING •Matthew 2:2 (NIV) — 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.” THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM JESUS CAME PREACHING THE KINGDOM • Matthew 4:17 (NIV) — 17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM HE WAS NAMED THE KING OF THE JEWS AT HIS DEATH • Matthew 27:37 (NIV) — 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews. THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM IN BIBLE TIMES -- A KING HAD: · · · · · · · · Absolute Power Unchecked Control No Obligations Or Restrictions Sovereignty In Conduct According To His Will A Crown A People A Palace A Throne THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM MANY PSALMS DELARE A COMING KING •PSALM 2, 24, 45, 72, 89, 110 –SPEAK OF A COMING MESSIANIC KING •Psalm 2:6 (NIV) — 6 “I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill.” THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM THE PROPHETS DECLARED A COMING KING •Isaiah 9:6–7 (NIV) — 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. •Jeremiah 23:5 (NIV) — 5 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM •Zechariah 9:9 (NIV) — 9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. •Zechariah 14:9 (NIV) — 9 The Lord will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one Lord, and his name the only name. THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM •IN THE PROPHETS HE IS PROPHESIED AS KING •IN THE NEW TESTAMENT HE IS PRESENTED AS KING THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM CHRIST IS PRESENTED AS KING: · He has a royal lineage · He claims to be king · He accepts the title · Others testified to Him as King – Pilate, the Apostles · His resurrection affirmed it · The Angels confirmed it THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM NEW TESTMENT LETTERS TESTIFY OF CHRIST’S KINGDOM •Romans 14:9 (NIV) — 9 For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living. •Romans 15:12 (NIV) — 12 And again, Isaiah says, “The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; the Gentiles will hope in him.” •1 Corinthians 15:25 (NIV) — 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM Ephesians 1:20–22 (NIV) — 20 which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, •Colossians 1:13 (NIV) — 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM Philippians 2:9–11 (NIV) — 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. •Revelation 11:15 (NIV) — 15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever.” • THE SCRIPTURES DECLARE THAT THE KING HAS COME THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM HOW JESUS CHRIST ASSUMED THE TITLE OF KING • BY BIRTH – Born A King In The House And Family Of David • BY DIVINE APPOINTMENT – As David Was Appointed & Chosen So Was Christ • BY CONQUEST –He Came Against The Working Of Satan • BY THE FREE CHOICE OF HIS PEOPLE THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM THE NATURE OF HIS KINGDOM •The Kingdom Of God Is The Rule Of God – Not A Territory Or Land Mass Rather His Rule – •He Rules Over His Kingdom In 3 Ways: • Spiritually, Universally, And Eternally THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM CHRIST’S KINGDOM IS SPIRITUAL • Jesus Said ‘My Kingdom Is Not Of This World’ • Romans 14:17 (NIV) — 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM CHRIST’S KINGDOM IS UNIVERSAL • It is For All People --For All Times -- In All Locations Of Life. • Isaiah 11:10 (NIV) — 10 In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his place of rest will be glorious. • It is Open To All People And All Nations Who Accept Christ As King • John 12:32 (NIV) — 32 But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself.” THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM JESUS CHRIST IS THE UNIVERSAL KING OVER ALL THINGS • Colossians 1:18 (NIV) — 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM CHRIST’S KINGDOM IS ETERNAL •It is An Unending Kingdom -- A Kingdom For All Times • Luke 1:33 (NIV) — 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.” •Jesus Is The Eternal King --His Kingdom Will Never Fail THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM HIS NAMES AND TITLES SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES • Christ Is King Of Truth, King Of Salvation (Mt 21:5; Zec 9:9); King Of Grace; King Of Peace (Lk 19:38; He 7:2); King Of Righteousness (He 1:8; 7:2); King Of Glory (Mt 25:31–34); King Eternal; King Of Saints, King Of The Ages; King Of Kings. -- ISBE • Revelation 19:16 (NIV) — 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: king of kings and lord of lords. THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM Jesus Came And Proclaimed The Kingdom --“It Is Among You” •A Kingdom That Stands Against The Enemy •Jesus Came To Set Captives Free --- To Heal Their Diseases --To Defeat The Tactics Of Satan --- To Give New Life •A Life Marked By Spiritual Freedom – Overflowing In Great Hope And Joy THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM TODAY HIS AUTHORITY IS HERE -- AMONG US •When We Believe In Him As Our King •We Receive Him As Our Lord And Savior •We Receive All The Blessings Of The Kingdom THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM WHERE IS THE KINGDOM OF GOD? • Luke 17:20–21 (NIV) — 20 Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, 21 nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you.” • The Kingdom Of God Is Where God’s Will Is Done. THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM Entrance into the Kingdom Requires Being “Born Again” •John 3:3 (NIV) — 3 In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” • John 3:5 (NIV) — 5 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and (EVEN) the Spirit. • John 3:7 (NIV) — 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM Mark 12:34 (NIV) — 34 When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions. •We Want Not Just To Be Near The Kingdom Of God •But To Be In It -- To Acknowledge Him As Lord · To Repent And Turn To Him—with Our Lives · To Confess Sin · To Receive His New Life By Faith
