Easter Sunday
Do we remember ?
Do we remember ?
what Easter is really about?
It has been over 2000 years, I wonder if anyone still remembers. Do they remember my ministry? Do they recall my cousin John the Baptist who preached in the wilderness of Judea, “repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Do they remember when I was baptized how the heavens open and the Spirit of God in the form of a dove came down and landed on me, and voice from heaven said. "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased."
Do they remember how I was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil for forth days.
Does any tell about the day I walked by the sea of Galilee and called my disciples to follow me; Simon Peter, and Andrew his brother were casting out their net to catch fish but I said to them "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of people"
Do the stories I told of the wedding guest and the mustard seed still change lives today.
It has been two thousand years do people still shout “Hosanna to the Son of David,” like they did in Jerusalem this very week. The religious leaders heard the children crying out in the temple, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they became angry and said to me, "Do you hear what these are saying?" I said to them, " have you never read, 'Out of the mouths of infants you have perfect praise.
The very next day the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, and they conspired to arrest me and kill me. They paid thirty pieces of silver for me; a small price for the life of a friend.
Who can recall the a place called Gethsemane; where I said to the disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." I went a little farther and began to prayer. Then I returned to find my disciples sleeping; and I said to them, "So, could you not stay awake with me one hour?
Does anyone remember how Judas, one of my twelve, arrived with large crowd carrying swords and clubs. Then they arrested me. And all my disciples deserted me and fled.
Do they remember Peter who denied me?
Do they remember the cross?
How about my trial, was it all a for nothing? The beating I received, the humiliation I endured, and the rejection I experienced, do they make a difference?
After they mocking me, they stripped me of my clothes. Then they led me away to Calvary to be crucified.
Over my head they put the charge which read, "This is Jesus, the King of the Jews."
About three o'clock when I could take the pain no longer I cried out with a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" that is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
Do they know this was not the end of the story.
Three days later, in the early hours of the morning, as the sun was just starting to peek out over the mountains, the earth began to shake. The ground was rocking and shifting under their feet. What everyone were about to learn was that God my father had sent one of his most trusted angles down from heaven to roll away the stone that covered my tomb.
Do they remember the stone? The stone rolled over the opening of the tomb. How the High Priest placed guards around the tomb. Then it was sealed with a Roman seal. Breaking a Roman seal was punishable by death. But when God goes to work, the guards of the High Priest are no match. When God goes to work no Roman seal frightens him. When God goes to work, no stone will stop him. The angle sent from God rolled the stone away. I can out of the tomb. I once was dead, but now am alive. I was buried, but I have been raised.
But do they remember
But do they remember
It was not for Nothing. Yes we remember and have come here to celebrate your resurrection just like your disciples.
Now I say to you what I said to my disciples, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
