Outline
Outline
Jesus is greater
the world would like for Jesus to be just another religious upstart
many Jews would like this as well
the Government does not want another revolutionary group
many Christians are falling away
similar purpose to Revelation with a different approach than John
Jesus is more than any of us could ever hope for and he is the predication for the idea of hope and faith in general
Moses
Moses
one of the most important characters in all of scripture
the instituter of the law
the leader of the exodus
the one who spoke to God face to face
he is good but he is not God
he is a member of the house but he is not its builder in the flesh
he gives the law from God
Jesus embodies what following him means
OT Rest
OT Rest
despite Moses, the people still have a hardness of heart by Moses’ example
the did not enter rest
Rest is an important idea in the OT as any sort of afterlife is vague and the current mortality is almost always brutal
the appeal of YHWH is that he offers rest and peace for those who follow him
a land full of good away from their oppressors that they often misunderstand
because they cannot follow God, they have a hard heart, they do not find rest
NT Rest
NT Rest
the good news that comes to them comes to us as well
the message and calling of Moses in perfected in our faith in Jesus
that we know the rest that is coming will be better than simply a Sabbath day, but rest from our work eternally
we are working towards our rest and this point will continue to be built by the writer
the word of God has a double meaning, the one who is living out God’s will, as well as the inspired word of the scriptures
AD 70 there are few if any gospels and some various letters
God’s word does this and your life shows this if you follow him
all of it leads to rest in the end if you stay faithful
Application
Application
there is nothing on this earth that leads to the rest that God offers because there is no peaceful life outside of him
there is no contentment when your concern is your own mortality
there is no end and nothing but terrifying death
there is no truth in this life and no law with a flawless example outside of Jesus
what else are you following?
