The Looky loos
The tik toc stars
The side shows
We love to gawk
We are people who just love to stare at the miraculous
We have seen this so many times already in Mark
We have the crowds that come to see
As we close out chapter 6 we see the same thing
Read Mark 6:53-56
Read Mark 6:53-56
read Mark 6:53-56
53 When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored to the shore. 54 And when they got out of the boat, the people immediately recognized him 55 and ran about the whole region and began to bring the sick people on their beds to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he came, in villages, cities, or countryside, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and implored him that they might touch even the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well.
Just like so many other times in Mark the crowds come to Jesus to see him do miracles
As Mark’s narrative begins to turn we get this view into what Jesus ministry has become
I want to take some time here to run us back through the movie up to this point for perspective
The narrative started with a man (John the Baptist ) crying out in the wilderness
Then Jesus walks into the scene to be baptized to symbolize him coming to be with us
We then see him being tempted in the wilderness
We are still trying to figure out who this character is
Jesus then begins to preach and teach in public he is proclaiming the gospel
The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel
This teacher then calls men to follow him and starts preforming these miracles
He was casting out demons
He was healing people sicknesses
He heals a leper
a paralytic
He then starts teaching
Mark takes us into the teaching of this man
A teaching unlike anything they had every heard
After this teaching his name is growing his fame and notoriety is growing
people start to know him
His miracles come up a notch
He heals a man with a very powerful demon
He calms the sea
The most powerful thing these people know
The place of much fear
He brings a little girl back to life
The question rings out “WHO IS THIS MAN”
Mark still never telling us who this man is
Showing us time and time again
These people should know who he is
His disciples should know who he is
Yet as we saw last week they miss it
Their hearts miss it
Mark is going to start to turn his narrative now as we transition into seeing exactly who this Jesus is
Soon we will see the disciples proclaim him as messiah
but before we get there we are left here with these crowds continuing to seek the miracles
Lets go back now to Mark 6:53-56
53 When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored to the shore. 54 And when they got out of the boat, the people immediately recognized him 55 and ran about the whole region and began to bring the sick people on their beds to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he came, in villages, cities, or countryside, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and implored him that they might touch even the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well.
The compassion of Messiah
The compassion of Messiah
One thing we should not miss in this look at the compassion of Jesus
These people clearly wanted Jesus for his miracles
We have seen this all throughout these first 6 chapters
But one thing that is missing in all of this
The chastising of the people by Jesus
We dont ever see a time when someone comes to Jesus for healing and he looks at them and turns them away
He never says you only want me for what I can do for you
He is ultimately selfless
He continues to heal and teach
heal and teach
Repeat over and over
He continues to call people to repentance to turn to God
Jesus never seems to tire of this
He loves these people so much his compassion for them is so clear
Remember Mark 1:41
41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.”
Jesus reaches out and touches the untouchable
and now here we are 5 chapters later and it seems they just want the same thing
BUT what does Jesus do he doesnt turn them away he doesnt just walk out these people will never get it no
He heals them
And he continues to do it
Jesus walked to the cross to die for these people these people who we will see in a minute recognize him but they recognize him as someone different than who he is
Jesus walked to the cross for us we have come face to face with who he is and we have come to him time and time again
I failed i need you
Only to walk away
And his compassion is so great that he looks at you he looks at me and says I will
I will forgive you time and time again “I will, be clean”
He will forgive us just as he will this crowd when the recognize him but they dont
The crowds recognize him....????
The crowds recognize him....????
Read Mark 6:53-54
53 When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored to the shore. 54 And when they got out of the boat, the people immediately recognized him
And what do we see these crowd recognized him
And what did they do?????
Did they worship him
Did they call him Lord
No they brought the sick
They wanted him to do the miracles
They recognized him not as their Lord and Savior but as the miracle worker
They wanted from him
The question it raises is what do we see Jesus as ????
We have spent these past 6 chapters looking at what Jesus has done
We just like these crowds and the disciples have come face to face with the fact that this a man unlike any other
These crowds and the disciples have been shown who Jesus is yet they dont recognize him
So what is it who is this man?????
Again we go back to that same question
The question Mark makes us answer
Is he just someone who does stuff or us
Or is he Lord worthy of all praise and worship
The butterfly stroke story
Is this what people told you about Jesus
Invite him into your boat and everything will work out
just touch his tassels and you will be healed
or did they tell you this
mark 8:29
he Is thechrist
the one who will sit at the right hand of god the fathere
coclusion
this is Jesus the Christ full of compassion who forgives time and time again and buds us to come repent a worship him
Phillipians 2:6-11
