It can be very difficult to learn things we have not been taught or haven’t heard - this includes things we haven’t even thought to explore or look for.
14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!”
As a pastor, I have the privilege and responsibility to preach every part of the word of God because it teaches us how to live in the blessing of the Lord.
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;
Don’t be the person who will not endure sound doctrine and choose your own desires instead.

Reverence for God’s House:
Reverence for God’s House:
2 You shall keep My Sabbaths and reverence My sanctuary: I am the Lord.
Reverence:
h3372. יָרֵא yârê’; a primitive root; to fear; morally, to revere; caus. to frighten: —
Reverent doesn’t mean dead, cold, distant, disconnected, or living in negative terror
The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom! (Proverbs 9:10)
If the ONLY reason we don’t do something wrong is because we are afraid of going to jail as a result of it, How many of you know that’s a good thing - even if we still had the desire to do that thing, fear stopped us and that is a good thing.
14 Happy is the man who is always reverent, But he who hardens his heart will fall into calamity.
Our happiness is connected to & dependent upon our reverence of God & His house flowing from an always-soft heart.
We want to operate in and teach reverence for God’s House and Sabbaths because it fosters happiness in our life!
Happy = Happy
h0833. - a primitive root; to be straight (used in the widest sense, especially to be level, right, happy); figuratively, to go forward, be honest, proper: —
The Enemy of Reverence:
The Enemy of Reverence:
The enemy of reverence is familiarity
Familiarity is a slippery slope that makes the uncommon - common & the special - ordinary
Familiarity breeds contempt
Familiarity produces lethargy
Familiarity quenches expectation
23 “And they shall teach My people the difference between the holy and the unholy, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.
15 And a voice spoke to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed you must not call common.”
We know we have gotten familiar when we have lost our awe and reverence and have started to minimize even great things &, instead, focus on (perceived) shortcomings.
3 Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they were offended at Him. 4 But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.” 5 Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.
Familiarity affected Jesus’ ministry and limited His effectiveness.
The Antidote for familiarity is honor & reverence.
41 He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.
This is why we use the title of Pastor (for us it’s really a recognition of the office and the expectation we can place upon that office).
Reverence for God’s House - The Church:
Reverence for God’s House - The Church:
11 Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things.
23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. 24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.
The Bible draws a parallel and connection between a wife reverencing (Standing in awe of & adoring) her husband & the church reverencing Jesus.
The Church should be reverent towards Christ.
Having reverence for someone’s home means that you respect and honor them enough to follow the rules and preferences of their house:
Taking off your shoes (doesn’t mean you can’t have fun inside that house)
Not jumping on the furniture
Not eating on the bed
Not rummaging through their medicine cabinets and drawers & refrigerator
You won’t be staying at that home forever.
Is there something that you absolutely HAVE TO DO Exclusive THERE that will ruin your happiness & experience if you are asked to not do that?
We teach and model reverence to our children:
We teach and model reverence to our children:
10 Especially how on the day that you stood before the Lord your God in Horeb, the Lord said to me, Gather the people together to Me and I will make them hear My words, that they may learn [reverently] to fear Me all the days they live upon the earth and that they may teach their children.
6 Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.
Train (H2596) - to narrow; initiate or discipline
Parents: If you don’t know where to begin - We are here to come alongside you. We will be offering a Biblical Child Raising Class sometime this summer called Raising King’s Kids.
Insanely Practical Tips to Begin & Have Success:
1) Don’t feed your (or other people’s) kids sugar before, during, or immediately following church (this includes fruit juice, smoothies, pancakes, etc.)
-It’s cruel to put jet-fuel in their tank and expect them to sit still and have reverence
-We may have kids’ classes starting back up soon & this is also brutal for the volunteer teachers to deal with
2) Plan ahead and bring quiet, creative toys for your kids to play with (maybe consider disconnecting from electronics during this time - this is good for adults too)
3) Practice periodic quietness and stillness at home - it’s called training.
4) Give your children lots of exercise throughout the week & teach/train them there are great places for them to play chase master, to scream their heads off, & to run in circles
- We ask that Church not be the place for that because we are honoring God’s house & because there are safety concerns as our building is not designed with this type of activity in mind.
5) It’s exciting for kids to see their friends and make new friends and playmates. We encourage those relationships and encourage getting together to play vigorously outside of the 2 - 3 hours we spend together at church on a Sunday morning.
Just One Thing:
Just One Thing:
Increasing our reverence for God’s House & rejecting familiarity will increase our happiness in God’s House.

What would be an accurate tag line for each month? (Pick 2 or 3 and make them GOOD!)
What is something that you learned or got out of this sermon that challenged and/or blessed you?
Please read Mark 6:3-5 and share a little bit about your perspective of how reverence or familiarity can affect the outcome of a situation or your relationship with God.
What is one thing you will personally do to increase your reverence, & reduce your familiarity, for God?
