Jesus Appears to The Disciples

After the Crucifixion the Disciples were in hiding at this point because they were afraid that the Jewish leaders would come after them next.
They thought that to make sure this movement was dead that if the Jewish leaders could find where they were hiding they would do them the same way to make sure this did not spread.
The greek word used here in verse 19 for locked is the word for Bared or braced shut.
They made it impossible for anyone to get in with out them letting them in.
They were afraid because of their association with Jesus but also because in the mind of the Jews and the Romans they would be the most likely suspects to have taken the body.
They were all staying in the same place and at least 2 of them had been to the tomb, Peter and John.
John and Peter may have been trying to convince the others that Jesus had risen from the dead, but it is unclear what was going on in this room at this time.
Jesus was fully human but yet was able to just appear into a room that was locked.
Jesus has defied normality all through this Gospel:
multiplying food
walking on water
giving sight to a man who had been blind since birth
raising Lazarus from the dead
This is the first time most of the disciples had seen Jesus since they ran away when He was arrested in the garden.
They may have been expecting a rebuke from Him for running away but thats not what He says: He looks at them and says “Peace”
Jesus was the propitiation for the wrath of God
He crushed the head of the serpent
He absorbed the sting of death
He opened the gates of Life
Because of the death and resurrection of Jesus the risen Lord can speak “peace” to those who know Him.
Peace is a byproduct of Salvation
if you have that gift of salvation then you have Peace. Not saying that things will be easy but the peace that comes with knowing that nothing can happen to you that God is not in control of.

The Two sides of Thomas

On the day of the Resurrection Thomas was not in the room with the other disciples
Where he was is not important but it is a matter of him believing the others about seeing Jesus.
This is where we get the old saying “doubting Thomas”
This is just another example of how radical and out of the ordinary this whole thing is.
Once again Jesus appears to the disciples this time with Thomas present.
Jesus does not Rebuke or Chide him for wanting to see the wounds for himself but commands him to believe.
It does not say weather or not Thomas touched the wounds of Jesus but it does record his response to the sight of Jesus.
Thomas says “my Lord and my God”
This is very telling about the rest of his life. Not only was Jesus Lord of his life but the God of it.
Thomas would eventual be martyred for the faith. He would give everything for the cause of Christ.
Here Jesus also states that the ones who are willing to believe in Him without seeing Him are blessed.
Johns readers hear from the lips of Jesus Himself that they are blessed if they hear and believe, though they do not see.

The Main Purpose of This Gospel

In these 2 verses John sums up the whole purpose for writing his gospel.
One way to look at it is that he is supporting the claim that he made in John 1:1-5
John 1:1–5 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John brings to light that not all of the things that Jesus did are recorded in his gospel.
John put in the ones that had meaning from the OT to show that Jesus in deed the one that the OT had predicted would come to bring salvation.
This is why not all the Gospels have every act Jesus did. Because some are not relevant and if they included everything it would be to much.
Each gospel included the things that proved the Lordship of Christ to the audience that they were writing to.

Conclusion

Just like the disciples we have to make a choice about wether or not we will follow Christ.
We must make that choice without the luxury of sight.
Once we make that choice then we often see affirmation in our lives and that is how we know we made the right choice.
Without stepping out on faith we will never have that affirmation.

004 BENEDICTION

May your eyes see the king in his beauty

That you might view a land that stretches afar;

Like Abraham, who looked to a city,

Whose architect and builder is God.
