Easter — Jesus Alive — Disciples — Locked room/Open air — Galilee
Breakfast — Peter — Intimate conversation — Question
John 21:15-17
Simon do you love me? The question was an easy to answer —
School — The simplest question —
Of course Lord! Followed from the beginning — Recalls that moment — Who he was before he met Jesus
John 1:42 “Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).”
A new name? — What did it mean? — His life had changed —
— Why the question? Not once but three times!
If you were to come face to face with Jesus alive…many question? If Jesus were to ask you one simple question, how would you answer?
Was Jesus doubting Peter’s love? Mother in-law Jesus had healed…Jesus took up the mountain? Peter the first to jump out of the boat… Peter there when jesus washed their feet, Peter who stood by him and didn’t betray him like...
Certainly Jesus knew he loved him! Jesus who knew all of Peter’s faults and yet had every reason to question his love — Denied him!
The great physician performing painful but necessary surgery on the human heart, and Jesus’ repeated question led Peter to a dying of
self and a new found confidence in his lord. Not a question of proving his love, but his willingness to completely surrender to the will of God
Wow…all of a sudden the question becomes more difficult...
____________ do you love me?
Turning point — Calling him to something bigger than himself
Matthew 16:15-18 “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah...I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church...
Three questions — Three different imperatives Jesus was calling him to — Simon do you love me...more than these?
Did Jesus mean the great catch of fish? - The people- The disciples- or even Himself? The answer, Yes…..
This reveals Jesus’ very intentional new role for Peter, to shepherd the flock;
● To LEAD them to Jesus who provides — Feed my lambs —Jesus, “I am the bread of life.’
● To TEACH them the ways of Jesus — Tend to my sheep — Like Jesus had taught the disciples
● To SHOW people the way of love — Feed my sheep —
We are not all called to be pastors — lead churches…but we are all called to point people to jesus
That’s what this whole meal …sit down was about — Lead, teach and show people my love so they will like you follow me...
How does Jesus question challenge you?
_______________ do you love me?
I pray that you will answer the call to completely surrender yourself to the will of God and follow, so others to will see and know jesus’ love
