In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,
Once again we find the word predestined.
Can anyone remember what we said the scripture was talking about with this word?
remember we talked about it was planned before, or in other words, God determined beforehand that whoever would follow him through faith and repentance would have a place in His kingdom.
in verse 11 the Bible says we have obtained an inheritance because of the predestined plan of the will of God.
meaning it is guaranteed that when we follow him we will rejoice in heaven with him.
Once again, this scripture is much more relevant when discussing God’s grasp on us as his saints.
In other words, John 10:28.
I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
Once we are a child of God we are a child of God no if and’s or buts about it.
Why is it so important that God has given us this promise?
so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.
In other words this should not be an excuse to sin or to live any old way we want.
This should be all the more reason to give our entire life to him and praise him.
After all, he has given us eternal life, shouldn't we praise him.
Why do you think that people use grace and excuse to sin?
Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
Once again, when we heard the gospel, when we believed and followed him in repentance we are sealed.
This solidifies our argument for Paul discussing the security of our salvation and trashes the arguement of predestination.
Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
So according to our last verse what do you think we are to do with our life?
Because of this promise we are to praise god.
Remember I told you last week that God’s purpose on our life is simply to praise him.
This promise is just all the more reason to praise him.
