Introduction of Jesus v.7

Revelation 3:7
Revelation 3:7 KJV 1900
And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;
In this introduction of Jesus, something new happens. This is the first time Jesus did not include the vision details John had of Him in Chapter 1. Everything Jesus says about Himself is new and fresh.
He starts with two attributes: He is holy and true -
Holy has to do with essence and actions
Essence
Only God possesses absolute holiness
Separated from sin - Even though He has this amazing relationship with humanity, yet without sin.
Independent - They are not beholden to anything or anyone other than themselves.
What He does
Everything Jesus does is separate from sin
Psalms 33:4
Psalm 33:4 KJV 1900
For the word of the Lord is right; And all his works are done in truth.
1 Peter 1:15
1 Peter 1:15 KJV 1900
But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
The angels sing of the holiness of God
Revelation 4:8
Revelation 4:8 KJV 1900
And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
Isaiah 6:3
Isaiah 6:3 KJV 1900
And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: The whole earth is full of his glory.
Th earth treats the holiness of Jesus with disrespect - Acts 4:27
Acts 4:27 KJV 1900
For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,
He that is true
In this context, everything Jesus says is true.
John 18:37
John 18:37 KJV 1900
Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
Genuine, authentic and real - In the midst of falsehood and error in the world Jesus is authentic, real and true.
Not what the people want - 76%
This never happens with Jesus
Matthew 26:65
Matthew 26:65 KJV 1900
Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.
Even though the world has nothing to do with the words of Jesus - His words will have the final say - Matthew 24:35
Matthew 24:35 KJV 1900
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
1 Corinthians 15:33
1 Corinthians 15:33 KJV 1900
Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.
Jesus has something - The Key of David
What he has and what the key allows Him to do come from Isaiah 22:22
Isaiah 22:22 KJV 1900
And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; So he shall open, and none shall shut; And he shall shut, and none shall open.
This was not directly related to Jesus.
King Hezekiah gave the key to the treasurer to Eliakim
Keys represent authority
He became the prime minister to the King
He was a faithful servant
All the responsibility of government fell on his shoulders
Isaiah 43:13
Jesus used this verse in prophetic terms referencing Him.
God the Father has given Him keys.
In Revelation 1 He has the keys to death and hell
Revelation 3 - Key of David
He’s the key to eternal life - John 14:6
John 14:6 KJV 1900
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
With the key of David, Jesus makes a broad application
I can open any door I want
I can close any door I want
And there is no one who can stop me.
Speaks of His sovereignty
Isaiah 43:13
Isaiah 43:13 KJV 1900
Yea, before the day was I am he; And there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who shall let it?

Encourages and exhorts the church - Revelation 3:8-11

Revelation 3:8–11 KJV 1900
I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name. Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.
Present - I have an open door - This encouragement is anchored in 3 interconnecting truths:
2 Corinthians 2:12
2 Corinthians 2:12 KJV 1900
Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ’s gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,
Acts 14:27
Acts 14:27 KJV 1900
And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.
Colossians 4:3
Colossians 4:3 KJV 1900
Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds:
Although Jesus is knocking at a shut door in Laodicea (Rev. 3:20+), at Philadelphia He Himself holds the door open such that no one can shut it.
They do not have much strength
This is not meant to be a negative term but positive about their strength.
Their strength is not in themselves but the Lord who opens doors.
2 Corinthians 12:9
2 Corinthians 12:9 KJV 1900
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
Philippians 4:13
Philippians 4:13 KJV 1900
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
Lesson for us: regardless of ministry we must never forget who is the strength of the ministry - Jesus - We need Jesus to open the door.
The encouragement is the Lord has the power to open doors.
They have kept His word
Not having much strength optimizes God’s word.
1 Timothy 6:20
1 Timothy 6:20 KJV 1900
O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
Jude 3
Jude 3 KJV 1900
Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
Colossians 1:23
Colossians 1:23 KJV 1900
If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;
2 Timothy 1:13
2 Timothy 1:13 KJV 1900
Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
In our own day, there are many pressures attempting to dissuade believers from keeping His word. “We are asked by some to abandon Genesis to ‘science,’ salvation by redemption to anthropology, the life of the Spirit to psychology, the very Word itself to higher criticism.”
Hast not denied my name
Hast not - Absolute negative
Denied - Contradict, disavow, reject
The name - Acts 2:36
Acts 2:36 KJV 1900
Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
Future
Synagogue of Satan
But do lie - present tense, middle voice: they themselves are presently lying. They are making this ongoing claim themselves.
The idea of worship before they feet:
Humbled
Defeated
Saved?
It has an eschatological feel
Keep thee from the hour of temptation
Temptation - Test
Test is future
Test is limited
The test exposes people for who they really are
The test is world-wide
All those that dwell upon the earth
“will keep the from”
Preservation? - post tribulation rapture
Linguistic
From - Out from and way from
Could have been - in or through
Saints wont be preserved in the great temptation
Revelation 6:9-11
Revelation 6:9–11 KJV 1900
And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.
He is coming quickly
hold fast - 1 John 2:19
1 John 2:19 KJV 1900
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
No one take you crown
