Ephesians 6:1–4 KJV 1900
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. 2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) 3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. 4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
It is right to obey
It is right to honour your father and mother
The child just like an adult is carnal in the old nature
there is a nature innate
Just like a husband in the flesh doesnt want to love
Just like a wife struggles to submit
The child has a nature that is battling - it is the flesh nature
dont tell me what to do
obedience must be taught to children
Train up a child
Proverbs 22:6 (KJV 1900)
6 Train up a child in the way he should go: And when he is old, he will not depart from it.
discipline, mentor, give clear instruction
Luke 2:40 (KJV 1900)
40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
Jesus grew physically, spiritually, intellectually
Physical Training -
Character Training -
Conduct/Manners Training - they must be trained - must be directed and trained and reminded
Spiritual Training -
Educational Training -
This is for their health and so that they can fulfill their purpose
As we walk in the Spirit - Husband submitting to Christ and loving as Christ loved the church
Wives respecting their husband as the church is supposed to be respecting and following Christ
And children obeying - in the Lord
This is the path to blessing in the home and this is how God has designed the home to operate
anything less will miss God’s potential and plan for the home
If there are consequences that outweigh the temporary happiness of disobedience - a child is being trained for success
Discipline should outweigh = If this is the only reason children obey, they will resent the discipline and grow up to do what they want anyway
The goal of correction and discipline is to train the child’s heart to love righteousness
Define Expectations Clearly
Fathers must communicate clearly
Flesh wants it’s own way
Beliefs
Our purpose - we have an eternal purpose for Jesus the Christ
2. Consistent Correction
one day it’s ok the other day
3. Compassionate love
You must say those words - I love you
Every time we leave our family - I love you
The law must be taught before they are saved / Born again
Children will have a problem with obedience - always
Training to obey is a revelation to them they need to be saved
The law shows their need for Jesus
After children accept Christ they have a spirit that has been resurrected
Now they must be taught to walk in the Spirit
must be instructed in this
Have we taught them about the fulness of the Spirit
Submission to the Spirit
Quenching the Spirit
Ephesians 5 teaches this
We cannot be imbalanced and have discipline without walking in the spirit instruction
Walk in the spirit and you shall not fulfill the works of the flesh
1 John 1:9 KJV 1900
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
We teach them about the fellowship they Have with God
The Law that convicts - that leads them to salvation
Then the Spirit can teach them what is right and wrong
I have taught our children if they learn to obey mommy and Daddy they will obey the Lord!
2 Timothy 3:1–5 (KJV 1900)
1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
no restraint...
Our Children are going to face new hardships
Obey = To be subordinate, to hear under, to listen attentively, conform to a command or authority: - hearken, be obedient to, obey.
Parents should display submission -
Men - under Christ
Women - under Christ and their husband
When this is not seen in the home = this will breed rebellion
two or three times telling a child what to do
How are we training them
We are teaching them to manipulate their authority
“Child in a store wanting a toy”
Your children must understand to never rebel against authority
This is a tragedy if children do not learn to obey in the home
The
What is behind the rejection to expect and require in obedience
Requiring Obedience Is Biblical and Your Responsibility
It is deadly if this is not taught
2. Obedience Is An Aspect of the New Covenant
You can’t tell me what to do” Christian because
Romans 1:5 KJV 1900
5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:
Romans 15:18 KJV 1900
18 For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed,
The Gospel teaches obedience - After salvation we are to live the Gospel through obediencs
Do you want your children to live outside of the power of the Gospel
It is not right for children to look at an authority and say i don’t agree ther
3. Expecting Obedience is Not Only Possible but Necessary for Proper Development
Under a year old, we have witness that child understanding no.
Don’t be afraid of your child
4. Teaching Obedience Is Accomplished When Obedience Is Not An Emergency
Consistency develops a joyful spirit in a child, that others will want to be near
Disobedient children know how to manipulate mom and dad
They know how to get what they want by pitting mom and dad against
5. The Work That Teaching Obedience Requires Is Worth Every Minute
6. Generational Sin Can Be Broken By Properly Training Obedience
Not teaching Obedience is a horrible thing
7. Teaching Obedience Leads From Compliance To Internal Joyful Obedience
Children learn to obey through faith
Little sweet girl getting not staying in her bed
Consistent Training
We do no justice to children when we don’t consistently train.
8. Proper Obedience Training Produces Happy Children and Happy Parents
Angry and ignoring Parents produce unhappy families
