What’s my purpose?
What’s my purpose?
One of the biggest questions I get, is what is my purpose in life? What am I here for?
Ever since creation, people have been asking the same question.
But the good news is, that God gives us this answer in His word.
Hopefully, we’ll be encouraged by the truth that although it is difficult it is very possible and very worth it to maintain a strong and healthy faith.
( Being a Christian is not supposed to be easy)
Background/context of our scripture
2 timothy
Paul was writing from prison and his trial wasn’t going well.
Paul was writing to his dear co-worker, Timothy.
Paul really wanted to see Timothy because he felt abandoned by everyone else.
Timothy was still on assignment in Ephesus, and Paul gave him encouragement and instructions about how to carry on with their mission.
There were leaders in Ephesus who had a negative view of Paul because of how many times he’d been in prison.
There are two main sections of the letter:
The purpose of this letter was twofold: to Remind Timothy of the calling God had on his life, and to encourage him to remain faithful to the truth of the Gospel.
2 Timothy 1:1–6 (NIV)
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,
To Timothy, my dear son:
Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.
For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
Hold Fast To Your Faith
Raise your hand if you’ve been going to church for at least a year?
5 years?
10 years?
15 years?
1 year = 52 sermons
5 years = 260 sermons
10 years = 520 sermons
15 years = 780 sermons
You’ve heard about Jesus thousands of times.
I think alot of us in this room, don’t have a problem with going to church, but we do have a hear problem.
because worship isn’t a priority to you
listening to God’s word isn’t a priority to you
You don’t have a sincere faith.
You’re not engaged. When something is important to you, you’re locked in and you are focused.
So, tonight… let’s make the decision that what we learn about God is vital to our lives.
2 Timothy 1:5–7 (NIV)
I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.
For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
a legacy of faith…
But, he’s sayin g Timothy.. I know you have everything you need to teach and live out the word of God....
Paul saw the sincerity in Timothy, because Timothy made his faith a priority.
What we learn in Scripture is vital to living a life on purpose.
Jesus sustains us and enables us to live a life on purpose. Hold fast to your faith.
2. Share the good news.
We’ve been given a mandate in scripture to Share the good news through “The Great Commission”.
Sometimes we are afraid to share because of what culture has deemed Christianity. but never the less we are still called to share the good news and to not be ashamed of it.
Paul, encouraged Timothy
So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.
Unfortunately, culture has created that negative stigma… and we unfortunately remain silent.
We tend to be like Peter, denying Jesus 3 times…
I’d encourage you to start creating Gospel conversations..
Ask people who is Jesus?
What did he do?
Why did he do it?
3. Rely on God’s Power
When we read the stories of Paul, Peter and Timothy or any of the disciples… we can’t believe what they went through and how the still remained faithful.
They did so through the power of the Holy Spirit..
We have access to that same power.
So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,
Paul was thrown into prison, shipwrecked more than once, beaten and stoned multiple times… Yet never swayed in his faith because he knew he was secure in Christ.
hold fast to your faith
share the good news
rely on God’s power
4. continue to grow
Salvation is the starting line, not the finish line.
What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.
Paul expanded on this idea in Chapter 3 of 2 Timothy
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
