Astrology

This is what the world calls astrology. Who has no idea what astrology is? Who, when they hear the word astrology, thinks science and mathematics? Watch this, according to the National Science Foundation, almost 60% of gen-Zers, thats you guys and me, believe that astrology is a legit science. Is astrology a science???

NO!

Astronomy (NOT ASTROLOGY) Astronomy is real science that studies the physical universe. Astronomy is legit science! We got Astronomy over here that is legit science where people study physical objects, like telling us the sun is a giant ball of gas that is 27 million degrees hot.

Then we got Astrology over here, and it’s NOT a real science.

The study of stars, moons, and planets and what they say about MY IDENTITY

So, what is Astrology. Maybe you’ve heard of zodiac signs or maybe you’ve heard os horoscopes! All of that, is astrology and astrology is the study of the stars, moons, and planets and what they say about my identity. In other words, the position of the universe is the blueprint and guide to your life. Astrology is finding this secret meaning in the alignment of the universe.

What astrology says is that, all you have to do is figure out how the planets were aligned the day you were born and then you will unlock the key to living a better life.

Is this the truth though? Can we actually find the blueprint to a happy life by finding hidden meaning in the planets?

Well, according to Starbucks they got you covered. Starbucks ran an advertisement campaign back in 2019, encouraging that you go look up your zodiac sign so that you can get the perfect drink for you. So Starbucks says that apparently, if you find out how the universe was aligned when you were born, you’ll find the perfect cup of coffee.

Not only this, but on the app-store homepage, we got astrology apps on dating so that you can find the perfect partner.

But thats not even it, right up their on the app-store home page, right next to pinterest and zillow, we have an astrology app at the top of the lifestyle section.

But hold up, I’m not even finished. In your iPhone emojis in the religious section, right next to the cross of Jesus, there are astrology signs. So astrology isn’t just this fun little thing to do on the side to make your life better, this is actually considered a religion. Something that people try top find meaning in.

Is this the truth though? Can we actually find the blueprint to a happy life by finding hidden meaning in the planets?

If you got your bibles, we are flipping back into the old testament to see what God has to say about astrology. We will be turning to Dt 18:9–12. First one there shout it out. Alrighty, now you get to read it. JK, ill read it for ya’ll, Dt 18:9–12.

English Standard Version Chapter 18

9 “When you come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. 10 There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer 11 or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, 12 for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD. And because of these abominations the LORD your God is driving them out before you.

So whats going on here? Just a few things. There is this new generation of Israel who is about to enter the long awaited Promised Land. And this guy, you’ve probably never heard of, named Moses is repeating Gods Law to this new generation before they enter into the Promised Land. So you got Moses, and he’s telling this new generation of Israel what to do when they enter the Promised Land. And what does he say? Verse 9 -

“When you come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations.

So God is telling Israel, through the vocal chords of Moses, DON’T follow the abominable practices of the Nations currently in the Promised Land. Then we read in verse 12 -

for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD.

Quick vocab test, do you guys know what abomination means? It means intense dislike. or it means filthy, or disgust. So what is God saying here, he’s saying DON’T even learn these disgusting, these filthy practices of the other nations. But what if we do, what if we just dabble a little bit in some of the stuff they worship? God says, don’t even dabble in it, because if you do then you become filth to the Lord. You become an abomination to the lord if you follow those filthy practices. So, what are the practices that God hates?

burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer 11 or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead

Burning your children, if you practicing divination, if you tell fortunes, if you use sorcery or magic, or try to talk to the dead, those are things that God hates. Let’s be honest though, who looks at this list of things that God hates and thinks to themselves, what kind-of world were these people living in. For God to come out and tell people to not try and talk to the dead and use sorcery. I mean it sounds like something straight out of the Lord of the Rings, or Harry Potter. How is this verse at all relevant to me? Here’s one way, lets read verse 9 and 10 again. When I say the word, divination, I want you to yell, STOP!

you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. 10 There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens

Okay, so divination. Thats one of the things that God says not to practice. Don’t do divination! It’s filthy. So, what is Divination?

Divination - A non-christian way of attempting to find secret knowledge through signs

Hold on a minute, how does this passage apply to us today. Astrology is a form of Divination.

Astrology = Divination

Astrology is Divination. Astrology is an abomination to God. Astrology, trying to find your identity in the planets and in the stars is an abomination, it’s filth to our God. God hates astrology, and not only does God want you not to follow horoscopes and zodiac signs. He doesn't even want you looking at it for a second, because he hates it. Why does God hate it though. Is God just a big Jerk?

WHY is God against practices like Astrology?

Reason 1 - GOD determines the meaning of things NOT the universe

Genesis 1:14-15

Genesis 1:14–15 ESV

And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so.

God determined that he wanted the planets for practical reasons. Like separating the day from the night or to determine the weather or to navigate the world or for determine the calendar and the years. Or to produce light and to make things grow. God, when he created the world. He didn’t leave us hanging. Like, he wasn't about to make it night time 24-7, so he created the sun. Or, could you imagine, before cell phones and such. How in the world were you supposed to figure out what time of the year it was? You had to look up at the sky. Amen, thank you Jesus for creating the stars so that I can know when to pull out the pumpkin pie.

We also have Romans 1:20 which says this:

20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made.

So not only did God create the universe for practical reasons like figuring out when to pull out the Christmas cookies and to make life easier for us. But he also created the universe to display his eternal power and show off the person of God. So when we look at the stars, we aren’t supposed to think, what does the position of the sun say about me and my personality. No! we are supposed to look at the stars and say, wow! There is a really really really big and powerful God out their who is to be worshiped.

The problem with astrology is it looks at creation like a mirror. Someone say mirror. Astrology says, when I look at the stars, your supposed to see your reflection. Like falling in love with yourself by looking into a giant space mirror. What God says is that when you look at the stars, your not supposed to see your reflection, your supposed to see the reflection of God beaming through the universe. God is on Display, God is being reflected throughout the universe. Not you and not me.

Reason 2 why God hates Astrology.

Reason 2 - God wants you to be dependent on Him NOT the universe

James 1:5

James 1:5 ESV

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

Anyone ever feel like life is difficult? Anyone ever get tired? Anyone ever feel anxious before? What about depression, anyone ever feel depression? Can we all agree on one thing, you can nod your head if you agree, or say, I agree Harrison! Can we all agree life is difficult? Life is difficult, but guess what the good news is? We have a God who is full of wisdom, a God who died on a cross so that we could have unlimited grace, a God who knows everything and will give you everything that you need, not everything you want, but he provides and gives us everything we need to receive true everlasting Joy. Gods not going to fix all of our problems, he’s not going to make life easy, why? Because he wants you dependent on him, to find your Joy in him. Now if God is the provider of wisdom and joy, why when life seems difficult do we then ditch God and go to other things. That’s what astrology is, it’s ditching God and saying I don’t need your help, I’ll get help from my zodiac sign. Life is difficult, but we’re not supposed to go to idols to try and fix our problems, we are supposed to go to God to receive wisdom which enables us to be joyful even when life kinda stinks. Life is gonna stink, God is our source of wisdom to help us feel joy during the difficult times, not Astrology, and not anything but God.

I just want to close with this, I know we focused on astrology a lot today, but I want us all to take a look at our own lives. What are you dependent on? What are you dependent on when life gets difficult? The easy thing to do when life gets difficult is to run to other things to get rid of that pain. God is the source of wisdom, he is the source of knowledge that allows you to feel Joy. let’s encourage each other to seek wisdom in the Lord today, lets pray.
