Introduction

Paul now pointedly asks whether God has rejected His people. The apostle himself is evidence that God has not fully and finally rejected the people on whom He set His love. Just as a believing remnant could be found in Israel in Elijah’s day, so there continues to be a remnant formed by God’s grace. By grace the elect obtained the salvation they sought. The rest were hardened.

A. EVIDENCE SUPPORTING THIS (1-6)

1. Paul himself (1)

2. There is a remnant, just as in the days of Elijah (2-5a)

Passage taken from 1 Kings 19:10 “10 He said, “I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.””; following his ordeal with the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel
The point is that God always has His remnant no matter how evil the day seems

3. A remnant according to grace, not works (5b-6)

The reason there is a remnant is because it is God’s sovereign choice not man’s righteous works

B. BUT MANY HAVE BEEN HARDENED (7-10)

1. An "elect" have been saved, the rest were hardened (7)

What Israel sought so earnestly… – Salvation that comes from keeping the law
…but the elect did – Salvation that came by grace

2. This "hardening" foretold by Scriptures (8-10)

Verse 8:
Isa 29:10 “10 For the Lord has poured out upon you a spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes (the prophets), and covered your heads (the seers).”
De 29:4 “4 But to this day the Lord has not given you a heart to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear.”
Verses 9 & 10:
Ps 69:22-23 “22 Let their own table before them become a snare; and when they are at peace, let it become a trap. 23 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see, and make their loins tremble continually.”
