Lead Off Question
Lead Off Question
Have any of you ever quit?
Illustration

The time I quit during my freshman year of college. But, because I was willing to fight for what I wanted I experienced some of the greatest things of my life. However, it did not come freely, it was something I had to be consistent about.
Transition
Transition
Tonight, some of us have given up on our faith. We have quit fighting for growth, and we have become complacent with God and its based on somebody else's opinion of you. You have given up because of what someone else told you. Or maybe, you gave up because you were afraid of what it might cost you. But here's the truth, our faith requires only one thing from us, obedience. And from that obedient heart we will experience the greatest life possible.
Bottom Line
Bottom Line
Our faith extinguishes our fears.

Bible Verse
Bible Verse
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,
To Timothy, my dear son:
Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.
For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

Here in this letter as Paul writes to Timothy he says, look, this faith was shown to you by community, and it grew in you through community, and it was affirmed by community. Paul is telling Timothy, faith is our common ground, it is what unifies us. Don't separate yourself from that. The whole context to 2 Tim is Paul talking about how many people have walked away from the faith that was taught to them. But as Timothy has seen, we should not just up and abandon our faith because it comes under pressure, rather, we should lean into our community that we have around us.
Paul tells Timothy, "fan into flames the gift of God." Breakdown what it means to give flames, feed the fire oxygen.

What does it mean to be timid? According to the dictionary timid is: showing a lack of courage or confidence; easily frightened.
THAT is the attitude that God DID NOT give us. Our fears tells us we cannot do, our faith reminds us of what has already been done and what is lying ahead!

Paul wasn't a dead prisoner, he was more alive that ever. Paul saw that his faith did not encapsulate bondage, but rather set him free from the bondage that he had lived his entire life by.
