105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,
What exactly is a handbook?
One helpful definition is that it’s “a concise manual or reference book providing specific information or instruction about a subject or place.” If you think about it, that’s what the Bible does too. It is a concise reference and instruction book for living a life that is pleasing to God.
The Bible introduces you to God’s standard for living.
Very early in the writing of the Bible, God gave Moses a set of rules for the people of Israel to live by.
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
3 “You shall have no other gods before me.
4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,
6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work,
10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.
11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
13 “You shall not murder.
14 “You shall not commit adultery.
15 “You shall not steal.
16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”
The first four addressed how the people were to honor and worship God. The last six spoke of how the people were to interact with others.
Was that enough? — At the time it was
In the New Testament, Jesus clarified God’s standard when He said, “Be perfect, therefore, as your Father in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:48).
48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Is it possible to be perfect?
With these words, Jesus set an unattainable standard for us to live by.
His words summed up what the Ten Commandments demanded. As you can see, this standard is impossible to meet. Yet God could not lower it without compromising His own perfection. God, who is perfect, could not set an imperfect standard of righteousness.
The Gospel allows us to meet that standard
1Co5.21???????????
The Bible is a guide
What is the purpose of a guide?
To help you find your way. Do you have any idea where you are going? Well, God stands ready to point you in the right direction, and He has given you a guidebook in the Bible.
14 that this is God, our God forever and ever. He will guide us forever.
The Bible is a light.
As Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” Whereas a guide leads you on unknown paths, a lamp provides the light for the path you are on so you don’t trip, fall, or get lost.
In this life, you will have times when you walk “through the valley of shadow of death” (Psalm 23:4 NASB).
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
But the Bible can be your light to show you the way ahead so you won‘t stumble. It will help you to discern truth from error and expose Satan with all his lies and deception.
Study the Bible so you will be able to see your way clearly and stay on the right path—God’s path.
Let it be your guidebook for life.
The Bible is a map.
A guide leads the way, a lamp lights the way, but a map shows the way. Do you realize that Earth is not your home, that you are only passing through?
1 Peter 2:11 (ESV)
11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.
The Bible equips you.
Most handbooks are training manuals. If you want to do your job well, then you must read and follow the instructions in the manual. It’s the same way with the Bible.
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
Someone read from the NASB… 2Tim3.16
2 Timothy 3:16 (NASB95)
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;
What else is 100% in your life… death and taxes!
Teaching—The Bible is “God-breathed”—it’s from God Himself, which makes its teachings a source of authority on how you should live your life.
Reproof—The Bible offers rebuke to those in sin. Who better to hold you accountable for right living than God Himself through His Word!
Correction—The Bible explains what it means to turn away from sin and toward righteous living.
Training or instruction—The Bible shows you how to live a life that pleases God and glorifies His name.
The Bible gives wisdom.
Where does wisdom come from?
God is the source of all wisdom.
And because God is the author of the Bible you can be assured that it is filled with His wisdom. But wisdom doesn’t just happen. You have to decide to “get wisdom” (Proverbs 4:5).
5 Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth.
How??? Do we “get wisdom?
This requires reading and studying the truths of the Bible. Wisdom is then produced as you apply God’s life-changing truths to your life.
What Does This Mean for You?
You can count on the Bible 100 percent of the time for 100 percent perfect instruction and information.
It is indeed the 100 percent perfect handbook for life—which makes it an essential resource.
Remember, the Bible shows you the way to eternal life, and is given to you “so that [you] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:17). 2Tim3.17 “17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
Be faithful to study God’s Word so you will know how to do God’s work and endure the challenges you face.
