Making A Difference Article
“Noted historian Thomas C. Reeves, who for many years was a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, wrote: “Christianity in modern America is, in large part, safe. It tends to be easy, upbeat, convenient, and compatible. It does not require self-sacrifice, discipline, humility, an otherworldly outlook, a zeal for souls, a fear as well as love of God.”
God did not save us solely so that we could go to Heaven. He calls and commands us to have an impact here on Earth as well. When we trade the shame of the cross of Christ for the plaudits and acceptance of men, we have forfeited the power to shake the world. Far better to be despised and even persecuted than to live a life without making a difference for God.”
Being a disciple for Jesus Christ is more than saying a little prayer, attending bible studies, and having good character and values. Being a disciple is a commitment to Jesus Christ, but what does this mean? What does a disciple “do’? and what should I expect? We will be answering all those questions tonight. Open up your bible to Matthew 10:1-25 as we see and hear the Word of God.
Matthew 10:1–25 CSB
Summoning his twelve disciples, he gave them authority over unclean spirits, to drive them out and to heal every disease and sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: First, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. Jesus sent out these twelve after giving them instructions: “Don’t take the road that leads to the Gentiles, and don’t enter any Samaritan town. Instead, go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you received, freely give. Don’t acquire gold, silver, or copper for your money-belts. Don’t take a traveling bag for the road, or an extra shirt, sandals, or a staff, for the worker is worthy of his food. When you enter any town or village, find out who is worthy, and stay there until you leave. Greet a household when you enter it, and if the household is worthy, let your peace be on it; but if it is unworthy, let your peace return to you. If anyone does not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that house or town. Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town. “Look, I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as serpents and as innocent as doves. Beware of them, because they will hand you over to local courts and flog you in their synagogues. You will even be brought before governors and kings because of me, to bear witness to them and to the Gentiles. But when they hand you over, don’t worry about how or what you are to speak. For you will be given what to say at that hour, because it isn’t you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father is speaking through you. “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. You will be hated by everyone because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in one town, flee to another. For truly I tell you, you will not have gone through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. A disciple is not above his teacher, or a slave above his master. It is enough for a disciple to become like his teacher and a slave like his master. If they called the head of the house ‘Beelzebul,’ how much more the members of his household!
(Prayer)
Being A Disciple:
Disciple: “Someone who follows another person or another way of life and who submits himself to the teaching of that leader or way.
Disciple = Student
“We are all students to something or someone.”
“When you say you are a disciple of Jesus Christ, you are stating that you will submit to His teachings and the way He calls us to live.”
“Do you desire/have a hunger to know Jesus and His Word?”
(Example: What are you willing to give up?)
The Lord Gives Us Power and Authority:
Matthew 10:1 (CSB)
Summoning his twelve disciples, he gave them authority over unclean spirits, to drive them out and to heal every disease and sickness.
“As a disciple, power and authority comes from Jesus Christ, through the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
Luke 24:46–49 CSB
He also said to them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead the third day, and repentance for forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And look, I am sending you what my Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empowered from on high.”
Why do we need His power?
1.) Christ strengthen’s our inner being:
Ephesians 3:16 CSB
I pray that he may grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with power in your inner being through his Spirit,
2 Corinthians 4:16 CSB
Therefore we do not give up. Even though our outer person is being destroyed, our inner person is being renewed day by day.
2.) Christ’s Power Enables Us To Be Servants of the Gospel:
Ephesians 3:7 CSB
I was made a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace that was given to me by the working of his power.
3.) Christ’s Power Enables to Endure Suffering:
2 Timothy 1:7–8 CSB
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment. So don’t be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, or of me his prisoner. Instead, share in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God.
4.) In Our Weakness, Christ’s Strengthens Us:
2 Corinthians 12:9 CSB
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me.
We Are To Proclaim The Kingdom of God
Matthew 10:7 (CSB)
As you go, proclaim, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’
James 1:22 CSB
But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
“How we live alone won’t lead people to Christ.”
Acts 4:19–20 CSB
Peter and John answered them, “Whether it’s right in the sight of God for us to listen to you rather than to God, you decide; for we are unable to stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
Persecution Will Happen:
Persecution: to harass or punish in a manner designed to injure, grieve, or afflict specifically : to cause to suffer because of belief. Also, to annoy with persistent or urgent approaches.
