1 The Other Side of Series Part 2: The Other Side of Despair Is Hope What is despair? Definition: Noun: 1-utter loss of hope. 2-a cause of hopelessness. Verb: to lose all hope or confidence. What is hope? Definition: Verb:-to cherish a desire with anticipation. -to want something to happen or be true. TRUST -to desire with expectation of obtainment or fulfillment. -to expect with confidence. Noun: -desire accompanied by expectation of or belief in fulfillment. -someone or something on which hopes are centered. -something desired or hoped for. TRUST, RELIANCE 1. The brevity of life can cause despair. Job 7:6–7 NIV 6 “My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and they come to an end without hope. 7 Remember, O God, that my life is but a breath; my eyes will never see happiness again. 2. Hope is the cure for a downcast soul. Psalm 42:5 NIV Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. 3. Hope in God’s guidance of our lives. Psalm 25:5 NIV Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. Hope makes us strong in the Lord. Psalm 31:24 NIV Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord. 5. God is our help and shield. NIV Psalm 33:20 We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. 6. Put your hope in the Lord while you are young. Psalm 71:5 NIV For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth. 7. Trust God to fulfill what He has planned for you. Proverbs 13:12 NIV Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life. Jeremiah 29:11 NIV For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 8. Prophetically all the nations will put their hope in Jesus. Matthew 12:21 NIV In his name the nations will put their hope.” 9. Our hope in God is rooted in His lavish love for us. Romans 5:5 NIV And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. 10. Hope requires us to exercise faith. Hope sustains us in tough times. Romans 12:12 NIV Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Romans 15:4 NIV For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. 12. God wants to overflow His hope into your life. Romans 15:13 NIV May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. 13. Hope makes us bold. 2 Corinthians 3:12 NIV Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. 14. Pray for revelation of the hope and inheritance we have in Christ. Ephesians 1:18 NIV I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, Ephesians 4:4 NIV There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 15. Hope motivates us to serve God. 1 Timothy 4:10 NIV That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe. 16. Hope is an anchor for our soul. Hebrews 6:19 NIV We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 17. We have hope because God is Faithful. Faith in Jesus gives us a new and living hope. 1 Peter 1:3–6 NIV 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade.
