How God Sees the People.

People who were nothing like Jesus liked Jesus and he liked them back.

His church is his body

________ People

Luke: An Introduction and Commentary 1. Sinners Gather (15:1–2)

‘One must not associate with an ungodly man’, and point out that this was taken so seriously that the rabbis would not associate with such a person even to teach him the Law (cf. Acts 10:28). Eating with these people was regarded as worse than mere association: it implied welcome and recognition.

Luke: An Introduction and Commentary 2. The Lost Sheep (15:3–7)

The rabbis agreed that God would welcome the penitent sinner. But it is a new idea that God is a seeking God, a God who takes the initiative.

Luke 15:1–6 NIV
1 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” 3 Then Jesus told them this parable: 4 “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’

When we lose something of value, we focus on what’s lost to the neglect of what’s un-lost.

Luke 15:7–10 NLT
7 In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven’t strayed away! 8 “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Won’t she light a lamp and sweep the entire house and search carefully until she finds it? 9 And when she finds it, she will call in her friends and neighbors and say, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost coin.’ 10 In the same way, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels when even one sinner repents.”

When we lose something of great value, we go to great lengths to find it.

The Lost Son

This son was lost relationally long before he left home.

The Father seemed to love his son more than his reputation

Overwhelmed

Disconnected/Lost

Missing home and wondering if home is missing me

I feel like I’m far from God

I wonder if God feels far from me?

Is God missing me?

Luke 15:20 NLT
20 “So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.
Luke 15:21 NLT
21 His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.’
Luke 15:22 NLT
22 “But his father said to the servants, ‘Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet.
Luke 15:23–24 NLT
23 And kill the calf we have been fattening. We must celebrate with a feast, 24 for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.’ So the party began.

Have you ever lost something of great value to you, and nobody was looking for it but you?
