God is the source for all compassion and encouragement
God encourages us in our tribulation so that we can encourage others
The Suffering of the Christ
Tribulation - Pressure
Suffering
Often associated with physical pain, Luke 24:46
and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day,
May also be mental, 1 Peter 4:1
Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,
Our Encouragement even Salvation, 2 Corinthians 1:6-7
Our Encouragement even Salvation, 2 Corinthians 1:6-7
If we are in Tribulations on Behalf of your Encouragement even Salvation , 2 Corinthians 1:6
2 Corinthians 1:6
And whether we are [in] tribulations on behalf of your encouragement even salvation, the [salvation] working in patience of the same sufferings which also we ourselves suffer and our hope is firm on your behalf. Or whether we are encouraged on behalf of your encouragement even salvation.
The Encouragement Paul is talking about is our Salvation
Not Initial Salvation
Salvation in Time
The encouragement even salvation works out patience
Patience is remaining under pressure without failing
Being Patient in good works, Romans 2:7
to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life;
Tribulation brings Patience, Romans 5:3
And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance;
Hope with Patience, Romans 8:25
But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.
Letting Patience Work Out is Important in Our Maturity, James 1:4
And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
Patience is A Part of How We Live Godly, 2 Peter 1:6-8
and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness,
and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love.
For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Their Salvation is Working Out The Same Suffering Paul is Enduring
Those who suffer have stopped sinning, 1 Peter 4:1
Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,
Suffering for the Sake of Righteousness, not Unrighteousness, 1 Peter 3:14-17
But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. And do not fear their intimidation, and do not be troubled,
but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;
and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame.
For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong.
Our Sufferings are a Result of Our Willingness to Work Out Salvation
As We are Partakers of the Suffering So also of the Encouragement, 2 Corinthians 1:7
2 Corinthians 1:7
We intuitively know that just as you are partakers of the sufferings, thus also of the encouragement.
Sharing in Common
We are Partakers of a Quality of the Divine Nature, 2 Peter 1:4
For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.
If We Share in Suffering, We Will also Share in Encouragement
Learning To Be Persuaded By God, Not Ourselves, 2 Corinthians 1:8-11
Learning To Be Persuaded By God, Not Ourselves, 2 Corinthians 1:8-11
Desiring for the Saints in Corinth to Know Their Tribulation, 2 Corinthians 1:8
2 Corinthians 1:8 (
For we do not desire for you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning our tribulation, the one having come to us in Asia, that just as we were excessively burdened, beyond [our] natural ability, so that we despaired also to live.
The Tribulations they Had in Asia
From Paul’s Ministry in Ephesus all of Asia Heard About the Lord, Acts 19:9-10
But when some were becoming hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the people, he withdrew from them and took away the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.
This took place for two years, so that all who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.
The Trouble in Ephesus from Demetrius, Acts 19:24- 29
For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, was bringing no little business to the craftsmen;
these he gathered together with the workmen of similar trades, and said, “Men, you know that our prosperity depends upon this business.
“You see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that gods made with hands are no gods at all.
“Not only is there danger that this trade of ours fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis be regarded as worthless and that she whom all of Asia and the world worship will even be dethroned from her magnificence.”
When they heard this and were filled with rage, they began crying out, saying, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
The city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, dragging along Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia.
Some Jews from Asia Where the Ones Causing and Uproar When Paul Entered the Temple in Jerusalem, Acts 21:27
When the seven days were almost over, the Jews from Asia, upon seeing him in the temple, began to stir up all the crowd and laid hands on him,
The Jealousy of the Jews in Antioch of Pisidia, Acts 13:13-14; Acts 13:42-45
Now Paul and his companions put out to sea from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia; but John left them and returned to Jerusalem.
But going on from Perga, they arrived at Pisidian Antioch, and on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down.
As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people kept begging that these things might be spoken to them the next Sabbath.
Now when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and of the God-fearing proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, were urging them to continue in the grace of God.
The next Sabbath nearly the whole city assembled to hear the word of the Lord.
But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were blaspheming.
The Jews in Iconium Seeking to Stone Paul, Acts 14:1-6
In Iconium they entered the synagogue of the Jews together, and spoke in such a manner that a large number of people believed, both of Jews and of Greeks.
But the Jews who disbelieved stirred up the minds of the Gentiles and embittered them against the brethren.
Therefore they spent a long time there speaking boldly with reliance upon the Lord, who was testifying to the word of His grace, granting that signs and wonders be done by their hands.
But the people of the city were divided; and some sided with the Jews, and some with the apostles.
And when an attempt was made by both the Gentiles and the Jews with their rulers, to mistreat and to stone them,
they became aware of it and fled to the cities of Lycaonia, Lystra and Derbe, and the surrounding region;
In the Dispersion, Many Christians were Dispersed into Asia from Judea, 1 Peter 1:1
1 Peter 1:1
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who reside as aliens (ἐκλεκτοῖς παρεπιδήμοις), scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
There Were Times That Paul Had No Idea If He Was Going to Live Through Them, 2 Corinthians 1:9
2 Corinthians 1:9
But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, in order that we should not be persuaded upon ourselves but upon God, the One raising from the dead,
Paul Speaks More of His Tribulations Later in the Letter, 2 Corinthians 11:23-28
Are they servants of Christ?—I speak as if insane—I more so; in far more labors, in far more imprisonments, beaten times without number, often in danger of death.
Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine lashes.
Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent in the deep.
I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers on the sea, dangers among false brethren;
I have been in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure.
Apart from such external things, there is the daily pressure on me of concern for all the churches.
Paul Constantly Faced Death for Preaching the Truth, 2 Corinthians 4:12
So death works in us, but life in you.
Our Confidence Needs to be in God, Not Ourselves, 2 Corinthians 1:10
2 Corinthians 1:10
Who rescued us out from so great a death and is delivering. In Whom we hoped because also He will still deliver,
Our Life is Hidden in Christ, Colossians 3:3
For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Living a Tranquil and Quiet Life in Godliness, 1 Timothy 2:2
for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.
We Do Not Know What Tomorrow Brings, Let’s Do the Will of God Today, James 4:14-15
Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.
Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.”
Their Cry for Paul’s Help, 2 Corinthians 1:11
2 Corinthians 1:11
while you are also together helping concerning us by supplication, in order that out from [the] presence of many unto us the gracious gift, through many it should express gratitude on your behalf.
