Intro:

Thank for opportunity
Name is Josiah Ott, I’m Honored to be a pastoral candidate for this church
Eager to meet you all after the service today
Let’s pray.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Hook)

HOW MANY of YOU, SAY THINGS SIMULTANEOUSLY w/ SPOUSE, FRIEND, ETC. ACCIDENTALLY…?
***Literally this has happened to Brittany and I a half dozen times since we left Friday to come here.
AS YOU GROW IN RELATIONSHIP…YOU BEGIN TO THINK ALIKE!
NATURAL RELATIONSHIPS = FRIENDSHIPS, DATING, MARRIAGE, ETC.
MOVE TO SPIRITUAL RELATIONSHIPS = THINKING LIKE JESUS
Today we’re going to look at a passage of Scripture that will show us what this can practically look like, if you would like to turn in your bibles to Philippians 2.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Background: (Philippians)

AUTHOR = PAUL.......YEAR = 60.A.D......WRITTEN FROM PRISON!!
REMINDER: WRITTEN 1ST TO CHURCH @ PHILIPPI, THEN TO US.
Philippi was a CITY in the ROMAN PROVINCE of MACEDONIA, located in the territory of modern day Greece.
CHURCH was FOUNDED on PAUL’S 2ND missionary journey around 50 A.D. CONVERSION of PHILIPPIAN JAILER in Acts 16
****SEE POWERPOINT PIC
This CHURCH had PARTNERED with PAUL in GIVING
BUT they had some ISSUES and PAUL WRITES to ENCOURAGE them to have JOY in the LORD and to BE UNIFIED as a church.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BIG ENEMY OF UNITY = SELFISHNESS
CHRISTIANS = SET APART. KNOWN FOR LOVE
PAUL WRITES TO HELP THEM & US.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TEXT:

Philippians 2:1–11 (ESV)
1 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy,
2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.
This is a RHETORICAL DEVICE, Paul is saying here, THESE THINGS EXIST:
ENCOURAGEMENT IN CHRIST
COMFORT FROM LOVE
PARTICIPATION IN SPIRIT
AFFECTION & SYMPATHY
If these things are true, who is to say that we can’t find ways to get along?
3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
SUBORDINATE IDEAS OF “BEING OF THE SAME MIND (V2)
have the same love
being in one accord and of one mind -
doing nothing from selfish ambition, counting others as more significant
LOOKING TO OTHER’S INTERESTS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PETER writes HUMILITY this way:
1 Peter 5:5b-7 ESV
Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
HUMILITY in the believer’s life is found TWOFOLD, in RELATIONSHIP with OTHERS and in RELATIONSHIP with GOD.
TREATING OTHERS LIKE BIRTHDAY
HUMILITY W/ GOD = DEPENDENCE…CASTING CARES/ANXIETIES ON HIM
SELAH - ASKS FOR HELP UNLIKE ME
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PAUL CONTINUES...
1ST BE OF ONE MIND (2X)…THEN HAVE THE MIND OF CHRIST
Philippians 2:5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
“Have this mind” = GREEK IMPERATIVE
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,
7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
“FORM” GREEK has 3 USES! 2 HERE
it means, “the expression of something. . .that reflects or manifests fully and truly (and permanently) the essence of what something is”
JESUS CHRIST = fully DIVINE…YET, HUMBLED HIMSELF.
SERVANT - GREEK DOULOS (SLAVE!)
PAUL INTRODUCES HIMSELF “SLAVE” (PHIL. 1:1)
WE’RE CALLED TO BE SERVANTS/SLAVES OF CHRIST
“You can tell if you have a servant’s heart based on how you act when you’re treated like one”
ANOTHER WAY REMAIN HUMBLE == “I’M A SERVANT”
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
CROSS = SHAMEFUL. ROMAN CITIZENS weren’t CRUCIFIED
JESUS WILLINGLY SUBMITTED to the CROSS...COULD HAVE CALLED A LEGION OF ANGELS...
PETER TRIED TO STOP HIM…JESUS SAID THIS:
(John 18:11b) Shall I not drink the cup that God has given to me? -
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GOSPEL- HE DID THIS FOR YOU, FOR ME!
HE DID FOR OUR EXAMPLE ALSO
Big Idea: Having the mind of Christ means that we will be humble and seek to serve God and others above ourselves...
9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
EVERY MEANS EVERY
JESUS is now MORE than a BABY in a MANGER or MAN on a CROSS...
CONQUERING KING OF KINGS, LORD OF LORDS!!
----
EXALTATION REQUIRES HUMILITY.
UNCLE DONALD FUNERAL, HUMBLE PEOPLE CAN HAVE IMPACT.
MEN + FAMILIES
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Application:

#1 MOST IMPORTANT…is JESUS your LORD?
BOW YOUR KNEE NOW.
FOR BELIEVERS:
Does your life proclaim his lordship?
Beyond This:
AREAS WHERE SELFISH? HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS REQUIRE BALANCE OF BOTH PARTIES’ INTERESTS...
GIVE OTHERS, BENEFIT OF DOUBT.
Often we JUDGE OTHERS, EXCUSE OURSELVES. “I HAD A GOOD REASON”
ASK, “HOW DO PEOPLE FEEL AFTER BEING AROUND ME?” AM I SERVING OTHERS WELL?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BULLETIN TAKEAWAY ??s, DISCUSS W/ FAMILY OR BY YOURSELF.
Remember: Having the mind of Christ means that we will be humble and seek to serve God and others above ourselves...
