Colossians 1:15–23 ESV
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. 21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

Our Fallen State

There is a clear description of the previous state
alienated only seen here and twice in Eph
We were alienated but not just separated by sin
In our fallenness we were hostile toward the gospel
Doing evil deeds.
This may not look evil according to the world
Sin as cosmic treason
Remembering where you were to see where you will be. A reminder of the need of the gospel.

But now

Pastor Dennis mentioning the phrase “but God”
Here it is the same thing.
In this translation it is written as he has now,
But looking at the translation the idea of But now demonstrates the moment of divine reversal.
In this passage we see the theme of cosmic reconciliation continue from 1:20
The tense of reconciliation shows it is a past event
On the cross we are once reconciled. The reconciliation is not an ongoing process.
Not falling away but holding to the gospel
Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians & Colossians D. The Truth about Jesus (vv. 15–23)

The if of verse 23 should not be misunderstood. This verse is not saying that we will be presented holy and blameless if we remain faithful, as if our eternal salvation depends on our performance. The Greek construction of the if is not an expression of doubt but an expression of confidence and is better translated as since.

Hope of the Gospel

since
referring to those who are true believers
They will not fall away
May wander
And will therefore share in the hope of this gospel
You
In this short passage we see where we were before the gospel, where we are now with the gospel, and where we will be by the power of the gospel.
All of this is done in the work of Christ
