Achan’s Deadly Greed
Corporate Solidarity
The concept of corporate solidarity is a recuring theme throughout Scripture. It is clearly seen in the sin of Achan. Because of Achan’s sin the whole nation of Israel suffers loss in the battle of Ai [Josh. 7:5].
Graeme Goldsworthy, According to Plan (Homebush West: Lancer Press, 1991), 204.
The chiastic structure here in chapter 7 is most interesting. The report of the successes of the Israelites and the accompanying miracles and power of their God sent shockwaves through the pagan peoples. We can note, for example, Rahab who states that, "and when we heard it [Israel’s conquest of Sihon and Og], our hearts melted and no courage remained in any man because of you" [Josh. 2:11, cf. also Josh. 5:1]. But here particularly, after an act of disobedience to the covenant by one man, Israel is defeated and the "hearts of the people melted and became as water" [Josh. 7:5]. Obedience means conquest, but disobedience reverses the entire operation. [my thoughts]. Furthermore, the ban which was to be enacted upon the inhabitants of Canaan is now enacted upon Achan and his family.
