God’s Purpose In Chastening
INTRODUCTION:
Chastening is first mentioned in the Bible as in connection with the sins of God’s people.
Chastening means Sin Correction, and that God loves us.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF CHASTISEMENT?
HE CHASTISES US TO HUMBLE US
1 Peter 5:5–6 KJV (WS)
Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
Humility - a modest or low view of one's own importance; humbleness:
A. Humility is submission to the Saviour.
B. Humility is service for the Saints.
C. Humility is sacrifice of Self.
HE CHASTISES US TO MAKE US REPENT
Jeremiah 31:18 KJV (WS)
I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the Lord my God.
Repent - the action of repenting; sincere regret or remorse:
A. The world needs to repent.
B. Nations need to repent.
C. Churches need to repent.
D. Individuals need to repent.
HE CHASTISES US TO LEAD US TO PRAY
Isaiah 26:16 KJV (WS)
Lord, in trouble have they visited thee, they poured out a prayer when thy chastening was upon them.
Prayer - It is our way of communicating our thoughts, needs, and desires to Him. It is an avenue that God has provided for the believer of making known the deepest feelings of our heart.
“Prayer is a neglected power”
A. Prayer enlarges faith.
B. Prayer energizes the hand of God.
C. Prayer endues the saint with power.
HE CHASTISES US TO TEACH US HIS WORD
Psalm 94:12 KJV (WS)
Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O Lord, and teachest him out of thy law;
“Bible study is a neglected privilege”
A. The Word is a weapon of warfare. Two-edged sword.
B. The Word is a wedge for separation.
C. The Word is a wall of protection.
HE CHASTISES US TO KEEP US FROM CONDEMNATION
1 Corinthians 11:32 KJV (WS)
But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.
Condemnation - the expression of very strong disapproval; censure:
HE CHASTISES US BECAUSE HE LOVES US
Hebrews 12:6 KJV (WS)
For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
A. Love, through chastisement, punishes sin.
B. Love, through chastisement, produces fruit.
C. Love, through chastisement, prepares the saint for service.
