Isaiah 42:1-9
The Servant brings forth justice
Justice for the nations
Isaiah 2:4- He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.
The insufficiency of the social gospel
Here is one place where the social gospel warriors fall prey to misunderstanding
Christians are not called to establish perfect justice on the earth
We have a Savior who will surely make that happen when He makes all things new
Our hope is not social improvement, but a perfect Savior
His justice will reach to the coastlands
There will not be a place on earth where the perfect justice of God is not upheld through Christ
Don’t be surprised when this doesn’t happen in this age
It will not happen by any president or leader or government
It will only happen when Christ returns to establish His perfect kingdom forever
The Servant tenderly cares for the lowly
A bruised reed He will not break
He will uphold justice for the least of the people
He will not trample over the lowly because He always upholds perfect justice for all people
A smoldering wick He will not snuff out
He is gentle and lowly
Matthew 11:28-30- Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
He chooses the lowly
1 Coritnhians 1:26-29- For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.
Jesus is in the reed-redeeming business
He is patient with us
2 Peter 3:9- The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
He is tender and compassionate to those who will come to Him
He beckons you to come and rest in Him
The Servant is sent to make covenant with the people
He is the means by which God enters into covenant with sinful man
Matthew 26:28- for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
What is the covenant for?
It is a covenant for the salvation of those who would enter in through faith
The covenant means that His redemption is certain
He is given as a light to the nations
To open the eyes that are blind
To bring out the prisoners from the dungeon
They will sit in darkness no more
They will be held captive by sin not more
John 8:12- Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
He will be faithful forever
Do you trust that He will not cast you away if you are in Christ?
Do you rest in His finished work on the cross?
Do you glorify God for what He has done in your life through Christ?
