We live in a world where warnings are in our everyday life.
everything that we buy, or use has a warning sign on it .
Warning sign examples
The Bible also gives us warnings.
In the book of Hebrews there are 5 warnings throughout the book.
A warning about disobedience Hebrews 3:7-4:13.
A warning of Immaturity in Hebrews 5:10-6:20.
A Warning about despising the truth Hebrews 10:26-36.
A warning about denying the the truth Hebrews 12:25-29.
In fact the book of Hebrews gives us an believers many warnings.
But the first warning is with the matter of drifting.
What does it mean to drift?
To drift (παραρρέω)
(pa-da-ver ll)
meaning to be washed away, to drift away, to drift away from a belief
it a settle thing, It is not a huge dramatic doing. it is quiet, skill, and without notice.
· watching a tv show and realize time has flown by
Background
Background
The writer of Hebrews is writing to a church that is at a moral crossroads.
Many new Christians, new believers in Christ are in a church
They were dealing with great persecution, from socially, emotionally and spiritually,
a lot of them came from Judaism and because of their choice to step away from Judaism, lead to many losing their lives and separation from their families and friends.
Many in the church were stuck not knowing what to do.
So it is safe to say that their influence could be shifted any which way.
It is possible for people to drift. To drift ending up back to Judaism. Or away from the truth altogether.
So the writer of Hebrews is encouraging this church to stay to course, to remain faithful to want they have learned.
The first Chapter
The first Chapter
So In the first chapter of Hebrews the writer reminds the church of exclusively of:
· the supremacy of Christ (1:1-2)
· his status as creator (1:3)
· his reign and rule over angels (1:4-14)
In this first chapter we are reminded of the power and authority of Christ Jesus,
So with this truth, the writer of Hebrews earnestly enters the 2nd chapter warning the people of the possible danger in drifting away.
1 For this reason, we must pay attention all the more to what we have heard, so that we will not drift away.
SINCE ALL this is true, we ought to pay much closer attention than ever to the truths that we have heard, lest in any way we drift past [them] and slip away.
W
In fact, the writer is saying, If you don't stay in the Word of God, if yo don't abide/stay with the teachings YOU WILL DRIFT
Hebrews 2:1 is a warning that is given in urgency because it is not noticeable.
We can even compare this drifting to drifting in calm, untouched waters.
The danger in this is that once we look up and realized that we have drifted we are in the midst of a dangerous storm.
MY DRIFTING STORY
MY DRIFTING STORY
Story of me at the beach
Drift is not Drive, When we talk about drifting, this is not a outright rebellion against God, it is a calm moving away.
Where did the time go?
Have you ever had a sin that you are committing that 10 years ago you never thought you would?
Warnings:
We must pay closer attention to what we have heard, because if we don’t we will drift!!!!!!!
This is a Warning!!!!
Biblical warning is to be taken seriously simply because it is a guarantee
Warnings help keep us from walking into sinning again.
This is nothing new…….
In Genesis 4:6-7
6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?
7 “If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.”
God gave Cain warning, “If you don’t do well, sin is crouching…”
The results were the first murder ever
And let’s talk about King Solomon.
Wisest man ever.
Bu Solomon had many wives, he had 700 wives and 300 concubines. His led to Solomon’s sin because his wives where a pegan worshippers.
4 For when Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away after other gods; and his heart was not wholly devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been.
Even in the New Testament:
In John 5:14
14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.”
Jesus gives warnings
The beautiful act of love the God has for his children. By warning us.
But because drifting is a slow drift, its like putting raw meet into a slow cooker,
we stick the fork into raw meat its hard and can’t be penetrated, but after a while in the slow cooker the meat become tender and can break apart with a butter knife. Let us not drift or slow cook!!!
So How do we drift?
So How do we drift?
1) Neglect - Hebrews 2:3
“how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?
Neglect definition is to fail to care for properly.
Its possible that we can fail to care for or neglect the truth of our deliverance This could lead us to a low view of God and a low view of our salvation.
We can also see Neglect as laziness.
A) Have you ever found yourself not feeling up to praying? That your day in too busy with other things that you don’t have time to read your Bible?
2) Compromise – Galatians 1:6-7
6 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel;
7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.
It’s possible for us to consider other sweet sounding words and emotions and assume that it is coming from God, but we are compromising.
A) Have you found yourself rationalizing sins, comparing your sins with others? Allow sins to go on in your life with out dealing with them in prayer?
How do we stop from drifting?
How do we stop from drifting?
And anchor on a ship is only good when the anchor in down on the ocean floor
1) Seek and search after the Word –
1) Seek and search after the Word –
Proverbs 2:4-5
4 If you seek her as silver
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
5 Then you will discern the fear of the Lord
And discover the knowledge of God.
If we are in pursuit of something, serious pursuit of something we will have a hard time thinking about something else
Pushing through the board not at it.
2) Keep the Word in you –
2) Keep the Word in you –
11 Your word I have treasured in my heart,
That I may not sin against You.
If we find ourselves storing up the Word of God in our hearts and minds, it becomes difficult to keep sinning.
Even in Psalms 1 it says:
those who keep the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night are like trees planted by streams of water.
Keeping the Word of God in us, as we actively seek after His Word keeps up anchored
3) Abide in Him - John 15:4
4 “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.
The word abide in the Greek text simply means “to Stay” or to remain.
Conclusion
Drifting is something that can happen to all of us.
It has happen to all of us.
God is aware of this danger and had given us warnings so that we can be aware of times when we beginning to drift.
God wants us to be in Him and not to drift.
Jesus is our anchor that will keep us in place.
The only way to be safe from drifting is through Jesus Christ alone. Our lives depend on it
5 Things to take away:
We can Drift.
Drifting to something that is not noticeable.
We drift because we stay away from the Lord and His Word.
There is still forgiveness from God in out drifting.
The Only way to not drift is to abide in the Lord daily.
Maybe someone here feels that they have been away for so long, they have drifted away from God and wants to come back. There is hope.
