Matthew 2:7-15
Hosea 11:1- When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.
Why Egypt? It could have been any of the surrounding regions. Of course, the obvious part of the answer is that Egypt was a commonplace for people to flee when they were seeking refuge from danger. But there has to be more to this reason because it’s prophecy and God doesn’t just choose what is common practice. He does what will give Him the greatest glory. So, the question remains… why Egypt?
The Exodus from Egypt was foreshadowing something greater
Jacob and all of his family fled to Egypt to escape a great famine
It was through God’s providence in Joseph’s life that they were saved
Soon, a new Pharaoh came to power to who Joseph meant nothing
Pharaoh enslaved Israel
Israel remained enslaved for 430 years
Moses was raised up to lead the people out of the land
God’s mighty hand would deliver them from the hand of Pharaoh
He saved them and led them into the promised land
The greater Exodus
Joseph, Jesus, and Mary flee to Egypt to escape the hand of Herod
God comes to Joseph in a dream and instructs him to flee to Egypt
Jesus returns from Egypt, according to God’s design
A reflection of God’s providence in the Exodus
This is the great fulfillment of the true deliverance
God’s mighty hand is at work!
All of it is God’s plan to deliver His people
This plan of God is unspeakably wise and gracious
Gentiles at the bookends
The Gentile worshippers in this story reveal something in this Jewish Gospel
Matthew’s Gospel begins with Gentile Maggi coming to worship Jesus and it ends with Jesus commanding His disciples to go to the ends of the earth to share the Good News
The first exodus was for the people of Israel, but this time it is for the salvation of all of the nations
Luke 2:8-10- Bible
We have hope because salvation has been granted to the Gentiles by the grace of the Savior
God has sent a deliverer
He came to save you from death
You were once far off from God and dead in our sin
Ephesians 2:13- But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
You deserved everlasting punishment for your sin against God
Jesus came to be slain for your sin
2 Corinthians 5:21- For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
His perfect life given for us and our sin taken upon Himself
He came to free you from the bondage of sin
You were also in bondage to sin
Obedient to it and you loved it
Christ came to set you free by the power of His blood
He breaks the power of canceled sin
He came to break the power of death and Satan
The only weapon that Satan wields is unforgiven sin
He is the accuser who accuses people of sin
His accusations hold no water for God’s people becasue Christ has taken them upon Himself
Satan now has no power over the people of God
Hebrews 2:14-15- Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
He came to lead you to a land flowing with fullness of joy and satisfaction
There is a better and lasting city that He is preparing for His people
It will be in His presence and we will be completely satisfied forever
It will be full of inexpressible joy forever and ever
God Rest You Merry Gentlemen (verses 3&4)
Fear not then, said the Angel Let nothing you affright This day is born a Savior Of a pure Virgin bright To free all those who trust in Him From Satan's pow'r and might
Oh tidings of comfort and joy Comfort and joy Oh tidings of comfort and joy
Now to the Lord sing praises,
all you within this place,
and in true love and fellowship
each other now embrace;
this holy tide of Christmas
is filled with heav'nly grace.
Oh tidings of comfort and joy Comfort and joy Oh tidings of comfort and joy
