Hebrews 9:26–28 26 “He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. 27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, 28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.”

Two friends were discussing the punishment for sin in the future life. They concluded that there was none. They decided that Hell was a myth. They said God was a God of love and could not consign His creatures to everlasting punishment.

A Christian who had been a silent listener to the discussion asked, “Suppose it’s true, after all?”

The words seemed to fall on the ears of the other two with crushing force. This morning Let us consider the subject “Suppose It’s True After All?”

I. Suppose it is true that God must punish sin. Luke tells us in the book of Acts.

Acts 17:28–31 28 for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’ 29 Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising. 30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.”

God must punish sin. How would you stand before Him today if you were judged?” Have you really thought about that?

II. Suppose it is true that Hell is real (Luke 16:23, 24).

Luke 16:22–25 “22 So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.”

A skeptic, anyone here this morning know a skeptic? A doubting Thomas? A negative Nellie? “Where is Hell?” Is there really a hell?

The ready and true answer came, “At the end of a Christ-rejecting life.”

Let me ask you this morning, “What lies at the end of the path of life you are now living, now traveling?”

III. Suppose it is true that the only Saviour who can fit you or make you worthy for God’s presence is Jesus Christ.

We read in John 14:5-7:

John 14:5–7 “5 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. 7 “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”

There is only one way you can enter into the eternal presence of the Heavenly Father, and that is by the Lord Jesus Christ.

Do you know anyone who middle name could be “WHAT ABOUT?” Everything that comes up they are in the thinking position of ---what about, what about. they doubt all things, it seems.

IV. For you “NA Sayers” Suppose it is true that the only thing which can cleanse you from your sins is the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. We’re told it is, over and over in the Bible.

Ephesians 1:6–9 “6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. 7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9 having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself,”

Acknowledging that you are a sinner, admitting to God that you mess up, usually daily and that you are in desperate need of a Saviour and that the Lord Jesus died for your sins, will you now receive Him as your personal Saviour?

John 1:11–13 11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

John 3:15–18 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
