Good morning and welcome to Oasis Church, welcome to our online family, it is great to have you join with us today. If you are visiting with us, we welcome you.
I have titled my message today:
Intro:
Just last week we celebrated Easter and on Sunday I shared that the "Tomb is Empty". Today we start on the new theme of The Holy Spirit, Baptism and Power. Jesus himself had spoken to the disciples prior to His death and resurrection that the Holy Spirit would come. He also prayed to the Father to ask that He send the Holy Spirit. Shortly after Jesus arose and before He ascended to heaven, He appeared to the Disciples and spoke to them regarding the coming of the Holy Spirit. Found in Luke 24:35-49
If you have your bible with you can you open it to the book of John and ch14
We will begin by looking at what the Promise of the Holy Spirit means for us.
Prayer:
Father we thank You to your goodness in our lives, we thank Your for the Holy Spirit, that You sent Him to be a comfort and a helper to us. I pray that Your Holy Spirit brings revelation in our lives this evening Amen.
Read John 14:16-27
John 14:16–27 NLT
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. 18 No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you. 19 Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live. 20 When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.” 22 Judas (not Judas Iscariot, but the other disciple with that name) said to him, “Lord, why are you going to reveal yourself only to us and not to the world at large?” 23 Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. 24 Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me. 25 I am telling you these things now while I am still with you. 26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. 27 “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
Start to break down who the Holy Spirit is to us.
The first promise of who and what the Holy Spirit means to us is:
1. The Holy Spirit our advocate. He is our comforter and our helper.
The advocate - counseled, coached and championed the cause of another in court. He was a helper, supporter, and a witness giving favorable testimony.
· The Holy Spirit is a councilor to us.
· He is our coach
· He is our helper
· He is our supporter
2. The Holy Spirit will never leave us
The promise of the Holy Spirit is that we are not left as orphans. John 14:16-18
John 14:16–18 NLT
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. 18 No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you.
· The disciples needed assurance that Jesus was not leaving them alone. The word means without parents, bereaved, without a father.
· Since Jesus referred to us as “little children”, so we are comforted to know that the Holy Spirit does not leave us.
· The promise of the Holy Spirit is that Christ is committed to us.
·
3. The Holy Spirit lead us into all truth
The promise of the Holy Spirit is that Christ is revealed to us by the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 2:10–16 NLT
10 But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. 11 No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit. 12 And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us. 13 When we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit’s words to explain spiritual truths. 14 But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means. 15 Those who are spiritual can evaluate all things, but they themselves cannot be evaluated by others. 16 For, “Who can know the Lord’s thoughts? Who knows enough to teach him?” But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ.
· Only His power can change and transform lives and set people free.
· 2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.
· The Holy Spirit will teach us all things (revelation)
4. The Holy Spirit live in us
· Acts 2:1-4
Acts 2:1–4 NLT
1 On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. 3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.
· Filled with the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit doesn’t just live in us He fills us to overflowing.
· The Holy Spirit resides in us. John 14:17
John 14:17 NLT
17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NLT)
1 Corinthians 6:19–20 NLT
19 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
· We have a well within us that never runs dry John 7:37-38
John 7:37–38 NLT
37 On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! 38 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’ ”
· The indwelling presence and power of God in the Holy Spirit.
· The same power that raised Christ from the dead lives in us. Romans 8:11
Romans 8:11 NLT
11 The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.
Conclusion:
As I hand back to Ps John this evening, we have looked at what the promise of the Holy Spirit means to us. He is our Advocate, He is always with us, He leads us into all truth and He lives in us. Over this next month my prayer is that you allow the Holy Spirit to continue bringing revelation of the true and full gospel of Jesus Christ. Amen.
