2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve;
3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
The verb Peter uses is the same one Jesus used when he said to Peter, Tend (poimainō) my sheep’ (John 21:16).
1 Timothy 3:1 (NIV)
1 Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task.
Here Peter tells the elders how they are to act, listing 3 sins to which the elders are especially prone and 3 antidotes to which ther should give attention.
namely sloth (laziness), desire for gain (greed), and lust for power
What does it mean to invest?
What does it mean to invest?
something you do today to get some kind of return in the future.
it is the committing of a resources in to some endeavour or thing in the expectation of a positive return.
EX:
Resource = time, money, energy
Thing = readying, research
Return = increased of enjoyment, knowledge
Traditionally it is related to finance, but it can be used in other ways also.
you can invest you time and your energy.
You can not be lazy
Jesus invested in 12 man
he spend time with them
He sat down with them, He taught them, He gave His live for them.
He took time to care for the individual
He took time to care for the individual
what does it mean to care?
compassion - is to put yourself in the others feet, place.
Ask the question… how can i help you? Do you need anything?
we don’t help people to gain anything it’s not what I get tout of doing this or that …
Matthew 9:36 (NIV)
36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Jesus saw that they where disoriented , helpless
When you walk on the streets or here in the halls do you look at people or do you look at the ground?
Do make eye contact? Look people in the eye is very powerful
Jesus just not look people in the eye but asked questions?
What is it that you want?
Matthew 20:21 (NIV)
21 “What is it you want?” he asked. She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”
Mark 10:51 (NIV)
51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.”
He asked question not because he needed an answer , but to interact, to show that He cared, that he was interested.
He remained focused on the big picture
He remained focused on the big picture
he was always reveling what was to come
He wasn't lost from his mission and purpose, its easy to lose focus when you have a lot of power. lust for power was the sin of the elders petter was talking about.
If you drink from the water i give you
