The Book of Jonah 1-4 Jonah means “Dove”

We know Jonah was Israels prophet during the region of Jeroboam II [B.C. 793-753] 2 Ki 14:23-27 Jonah is called by God and goes to the Nineveh [B.C.725] Jonah 1:1-2
Themes:
The Book of Jonah carries a weight of themes that flow through this book and should be a reminder toward who God was then and Now.
God is unchanging, He is the same yesterday, today and forever Heb 6:18, 13:8
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Let’s take a look at some of the themes found in Book of Jonah

God care’s for the broken Jonah 1:1-2
God will have His way
God’s Compassion Jonah 1:3
God will move mountains for or against us
God provides rescue through extraordinary means
God has not forgotten about you
God will have His way
God cares even for the worst sinner
God says,”shall I not have compassion...”
God will provide
God’s greatest desire gives us Hope
God is the same yesterday… Heb 13:8
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
So very important, as we read the Old Testament, like here in Jonah 1-4 that Jesus, who we know is God
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.
speaks to us though His word [OT & NT] for us to better understand who He is and how gracious He is toward us-even in our weakness
Purpose & Background:
For one thing, I believe the book of Jonah shows us the providence of God throughout the book
God interacts with Jonah
God’s word come to Jonah
God knows Jonahs heart
God see’s Jonah fleeing
God follows in a Great Storm
God Care’s for Non-believers, and hears their prayers
God’s will, is in the chosen lot
God provides a Great Fish
God sustain’s life in a the belly of a Great Fish / Jesus in the Heart of the earth
God hears our prayers no matter where we are
God control’s even the fish, plants, Worms to do His bidding
God gives second and third chances
God Salvation is for all
God doesn’t stop because it’s over
God cares, even for the little things
God care’s, even when we think otherwise
God hears our cry
God has unimaginable compassion
Nineveh was thought to be built by Nimrod Gen 10:11 and was located off the banks of the Tigris river just 500 mi NE of Israel. Today Iran, Iraq, Turkey area
Nineveh is thought to derive from name from GK ‘nimus,’ which means the residence of Nineveh and by the way, was a major Assyrian Capital City-almost as large as Babylon Jonah 3:3
Another strange pit of possible truth, is the people in Nineveh worship the goddess Nanshe [Akkadian for Fish]
Theological Message:
Jonah 4:2-3 cites Exodus 34:6-7 Jonah’s theology stems from past books of his day. Other writtings Num 14:13-14, Neh 9:17, Ps 111-112, Joel 2:12-17 Jonah theology stems from the 5 Books of Moses and some other writing on Jonahs day-again, we need to take the whole bible into account when learning about God!
