Wrestling with scripture
What do you think the definition of interpretation means?
(N) - The action of explaining the meaning of something; an explanation or way of explaining; A stylistic representation of a creative work or dramatic role.
When it comes to the bible we often need to wrestle with the scripture to gain understanding, wisdom to come to what God meant to convey, then and what it means to us now.
Oftentimes this is going beyond our knowledge and understanding but seeking through the scripture in every way we can to gain better understanding of a passage.
Biblical interpretation means:
Hermeneutics, when we briefly defined a few weeks ago, meaning the science of interpreting what an author has written.
It’s a branch of theology that deals with the principles and methodology of exegesis, what does the bible say.
Our meaning, our understanding may not be God’s meaning.
Here let’s look at a sample verse, then passage to see.
Gal3:28 “28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
So, interpret this for me, what does it mean?
Now, we better back up and look in context to see if we got the right interpretation
Gal3:26-29 “26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.”
Now, has your interpretation changed?
