Every culture, society, person, and business has a particular way of doing things. These ways are defined and clarified through laws or unwritten actions, but everyone has a “modus operandi” (method of operation). Every new corporation must have articles of incorporation and bylaws that will govern that organization. This documentation becomes legal, determining the way the company will run. As the world becomes smaller through technology, there is becoming a clearly defined way of the world, sometimes referred to as human rights or a one-world order. The Bible describes rulers of this world and the principalities of darkness determining this way. The way of the world is contrary to the way of God. When these two ways collide, conflict arises. The only resolution of the two ways is to oppress or annihilate one so the other can move forward. We enjoy religious freedoms in the U.S. that allow us to follow the way of the Lord even if it is in contrast to the society around us. But, I think it’s clear to everyone that culture is challenging these freedoms, if not dissolving them, being determined as a threat to the better way of society.

The Promise of Persecution

John 15:18–21 ESV
18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.
John 16:33 ESV
33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

The Cause of Persecution

The Way of the Lord

Isaiah 55:8–9 ESV
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
John 14:6 ESV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

The Way of Humanity

Proverbs 14:12 ESV
12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.
Matthew 7:13–14 ESV
13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

Dealing with Persecution

The nature of dealing with the conflict is very different. The world deals with conflict through oppression, cancel culture, and war. God deals with conflict through love, truth, acceptance, and forgiveness.

Learn to love the persecutors

Matthew 5:43–48 ESV
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Learn to endure persecution

2 Timothy 2:3–4 ESV
3 Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him.
2 Timothy 2:8–10 ESV
8 Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

How do we move forward?

Matthew 10:16 ESV
16 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
“Be sheep among wolves.”
Sheep are vulnerable against wolves. There is no defence they can mount against the wolves.
The Shepherd guards the sheep. He protects them and delivers them from the wolves.
“Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”
Wisdom is applying the truth of God’s word to worldly situations.
Innocents is doing good no matter the bad done to you.
Endure persecution for the sake of the Kingdom.
