· Connection
o There are a lot of things fighting for our attention, right?
§ Sports, school, relationships, hobbies, NETFLIX, etc
§ How do we know what to give our attention to? How do we know what to give our lives to?—Social issues, political issues, FRIEND issues
o The world is full of things saying I AM WORTHY OF YOUR ATTENTION
o Tonight, we are going to talk about how Only God is worthy because only He is Holy
o In week 4 of Worthy… Why is God worthy?
§ Talking through characteristics of God
o In a culture full of things calling for our attention… what sets God apart… the apart actually has everything to do with the answer
· Truth
o Isaiah 6:1-3
§ Prophet- God’s communicator
§ Initial vision that spurs his purpose as prophet
§ HOLY HOLY HOLY
· Emphasis due to repetition
§ We see his holiness through His glory. We see his glory through all creation
· Space, ocean, mountains, valleys, wildlife, FOOD
o God is Holy
§ Singled out, set apart
· Above creation as creator, perfect being, being uncreated, faithful because he is unchanging, above all things… PERFECT
· This perfection is so outside our understanding it is difficult to wrap our heads around
· Like NO other
o God is so set apart… He is the only one worthy of our devotion and attention
o Only God is worthy because only He is Holy
§ Nothing else comes close to comparing
§ When we come face to face with His holiness, his perfection, we get wrecked
o Isaiah 6:4-5
§ Realizes how messed up, insecure, rotten, and horrible he is…
§ Then worships God…
§ He thought he was great, compared to God… not even close
§ He finally understood no one is like our God
o There is nothing on this planet that can come close to God….. Isaiah realizes… I AM NOT WORTHY… God is so perfect, so set apart… He cannot tolerate imperfection… He is allergic to it
o Sin has tainted everything with imperfections…. Isaiah is hopeless… Lost
o In this moment, God cleanses him… makes him righteous… and Isaiah goes on to proclaim God’s holiness for the rest of his life
§ His sole attention is on God
o Only God is worthy because only He is holy
· Application
o Like Isaiah… we are not worthy… we do not deserve to be in the presence of God… GOSPEL… God brings us out of our despair and into His presence through Jesus
o He calls us to holiness
§ We can’t do this on our own… we are imperfect… Through the work of the H.S. he calls us to strive for holiness… to line up our words and actions with His word
o But we can’t pursue holiness halfway
§ Holiness requires our whole self wholly in the Gospel
o What has got you distracted? What are you putting ahead of holiness?
§ My story in High School wrecked myself
o Only God is worthy because only He is Holy
§ We need to have an Isaiah moment… Getting on our knees in front of Jesus.
