Matthew 6:24 ESV
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

Everyone Has a Master that they Serve Voluntarily

Joshua 24:15 ESV
And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Deuteronomy 30:19 ESV
I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live,
Hebrews 11:24–25 ESV
By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.
Quick to differentiate themselves from the masses
don’t walk lock-step with this group or that
What ever governs your thoughts, desires, decisions, focus, time is your master.
We are the sum total of what has molded us
There is no neutral area here - WE ALL FOLLOW SOMETHING WHICH IS OUR MASTER
Romans 6:17–18 ESV
But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.
You basically are slaves to righteousness AS GOD SEES IT, or a slave to unrighteousness AS GOD SEES IT.

There Can Be No Other Master But God

Matthew 6:24 ESV
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Two different goals, to different expectations.
In most instances the goals and expectations are in direct opposition to the each other.
Your Loyalty to one Master Automatically makes you disloyal to the other
You can’t serve 2 masters, no matter what the other thing competing for mastery in your life - You can’t serve both God and anything else
When it comes to matters of faith we don't want to:
Rock the boat.
Become victims of ridicule.
Be marginalized.
Be rejected by those we admire in the world.
Be attacked by other religions.
Can’t be a child of God while tethered to the world
Treat God like that divorced weekend parent. While you with one parent – they talk about the other, vise versa with the other parent

SLAVE TO THE ALTER OF SELF

Surrender is difficult because it is in conflict with our self-interests

HOW DO WE CHOOSE GOD AS OUR MASTER

Study Christ

Hebrews 12:2 ESV
looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Not just study Christ, but imitate him
May feel unnatural because it’s in conflict with you other master
Philippians 2:3–5 ESV
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
Don’t only look out for self look out to others

Compare Yourself With Christ

Hebrews 12:3 ESV
Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.

LET GO

Do an honest assessment of yourself in comparison to Christ.
What has your greatest attention - and it is accordance with the word of God
They have you only added Jesus to your collection of friends, possessions and toys, but nothing has really changed.
Is Jesus is just your latest acquisition?
A true Christian will die to self and follow Christ.
Are you a true Christian or are you playing a pretend one?
Who are you living for?
The sign that you are a real Christian is that you will want to die to yourself and follow Christ.
Are you following Christ?
Are you faithfully in fellowship with and serving a body of believers?
Are you faithfully attending church and worshiping with other Christians? Or have you invented some reason to be disobedient?
How is your prayer life with God? Are you reading your Bible? My point is – for whom are you living?
