The Children of God
We are going to be in Mark 10 today.
Today is Mother’s Day.
I want to thank all the Mother’s that are here.
When you think about Mother’s, what do you think of?
Most of us think about our Mother, or our Grandmother.
Why is that?
Being a mother is not just something you are, but something you do.
When you look at societies that are at risk, you see a common factor - Do you know what it is?
It’s the absence of a Father or father figure.
Why am I talking about fathers on Mother’s Day?
It’s because for the most part, the mother is there.
Mom’s are intrinsically tied to there kids.
When I was a kid, my parents divorced.
I stayed with my Mom.
Dad’s almost never got the kids.
Let’s just face it dads are not well equipped to deal with children.
Grandpas might be, but dads don’t usually have the patience.
Who is more likely to leave?
Who is more likely to kill them?
There might have been a time or two where the only thing keeping me from killing one of the boys is what I would do with the body.
I don’t care if you if you call me sexist, I’m just stating the facts.
Moms are special.
Moms love their children.
Moms pray for their children.
I saw my Dad morn his Dad.
It was hard on him, but not as hard as loosing his mom.
Happy Mother’s Day.
Let’s talk about God’s Children.
Touch Them
Landon read the Matthew 19 account and it says put his hands on them.
Here is says touch them.
The idea is clearly that he was to pray for them and bless them.
However, let’s just talk about the the idea of touch.
To be honest, we don’t know what’s going on with touch, but we do know that it is helpful
It reduces stress, it helps with depression, it lowers your BP.
I’ve heard that hugging or holding someone for a minute gives off a natural trust.
I remember that i went over to a friends house one time and his daughter just came over and sat in my lap.
Sometimes kids just know when someone is safe.
point here is that Jesus is showing the importance of children.
The importance of holding them.
The importance of touch.
I’ve said this before, but I went to church with my buddy Bobby a few times.
Even though I wasn’t a Christian, I was touched by something they did every Sunday.
The Pastor would gather all the children, and he would pray over them.
It was touching.
When we look at scripture, an elder blessing the children comes up often.
Think of Abraham blessing Isaac, and Isaac blessing Jacob, and Jacob blessing his sons.
But the blessing goes both ways, doesn’t it.
Kids are a blessing
We are to touch our children, but we need to
Teach Them
It is not explicitly stated here, but this is exactly what Jesus is doing.
He is leading by example.
He is teaching his children.
The Bible tells us we should be teaching many places.
One place is:
This is a truism.
Proverbs are general rules about life and so it doesn’t always follow.
But there are commands, like in:
All of these things point to us teaching our children about God.
Are we teaching them?
Maybe we are but do we:
Trust Like Them
The text here says we must be like a child.
This does not mean we are to be childish, but to trust like children.
Do you trust God like a child trusts their parents?
Think about this.
Young children infants, babies
They cannot take care of themselves at all, but must rely on their parents for nearly everything.
We are to rely on God for everything as well.
Remember what Jesus told Nicodemus - That we must be born again.
All of our understanding is renewed when we are saved.
We are saved by Grace through Faith.
How’s your faith?
Let’s trust God.
