The Overall Series Title: (That You May Know) Title of Today’s Sermon: (An
Extraordinary Experience): (1 John 1:1-4)
Melodic Line: “These things we write so that your joy may be made complete, so that
you may not sin, and so that you may know that you have eternal life.”
The Author: The Apostle John (The disciple whom Jesus loved; One of the sons of
thunder; Brother of James; son of Zebedee; Companion and partner with Peter in the
early part of the Book of Acts).
Date of Writing: Most believe in about: (A.D. 85-95)
Occasion for the Letter: (To encourage his readers to experience a complete joy vs. 4,
through the truth of God’s Word. So, he writes to expose the errors of the prevailing
heresy, Gnosticism).
What is Gnosticism: A heresy that denied the physical reality of Christ, through the
Incarnation. Thus, He could not have been the atoning sacrifice sent from God.
Therefore, they denied the full reality of the Gospel.
