Date of Writing: Most believe in about: (A.D. 85-95) Occasion for the Letter: (To encourage his readers to experience a complete joy vs. 4, through the truth of God’s Word. So, he writes to expose the errors of the prevailing heresy, Gnosticism). What is Gnosticism: A heresy that denied the physical reality of Christ, through the Incarnation. Thus, He could not have been the atoning sacrifice sent from God. Therefore, they denied the full reality of the Gospel.
