Sermon Introduction

Being Mother’s Day I wanted to stay in the theme.
Not ready for Proverbs 31
Proverbs 31 KJV 1900
1 The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him. 2 What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? And what, the son of my vows? 3 Give not thy strength unto women, Nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings. 4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; Nor for princes strong drink: 5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, And pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted. 6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, And wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. 7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, And remember his misery no more. 8 Open thy mouth for the dumb In the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. 9 Open thy mouth, judge righteously, And plead the cause of the poor and needy. 10 Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. 11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, So that he shall have no need of spoil. 12 She will do him good and not evil All the days of her life. 13 She seeketh wool, and flax, And worketh willingly with her hands. 14 She is like the merchants’ ships; She bringeth her food from afar. 15 She riseth also while it is yet night, And giveth meat to her household, And a portion to her maidens. 16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: With the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. 17 She girdeth her loins with strength, And strengtheneth her arms. 18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: Her candle goeth not out by night. 19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, And her hands hold the distaff. 20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; Yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. 21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: For all her household are clothed with scarlet. 22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; Her clothing is silk and purple. 23 Her husband is known in the gates, When he sitteth among the elders of the land. 24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; And delivereth girdles unto the merchant. 25 Strength and honour are her clothing; And she shall rejoice in time to come. 26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; And in her tongue is the law of kindness. 27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, And eateth not the bread of idleness. 28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praiseth her. 29 Many daughters have done virtuously, But thou excellest them all. 30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: But a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; And let her own works praise her in the gates.
In preparation for the morning I read some about this passage and was shown somethings that I believe will help us tonight.
The youth have saying “put some respect on that name.” We should do that for mothers.
Proverbs 1:7–9 (KJV 1900)
Proverbs 1:7–9 KJV 1900
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: But fools despise wisdom and instruction. 8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother: 9 For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, And chains about thy neck.
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: But fools despise wisdom and instruction.
8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother:
9 For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, And chains about thy neck.

Solomon shows respect to his mother.

Even kings should stoop when their mothers enter the room.

1 Kings 2:19 Bath-sheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king’s mother; and she sat on his right hand.
1 Kings 2:19 KJV 1900
19 Bath-sheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king’s mother; and she sat on his right hand.

We should follow Jesus example and treat women differently then this world.

John 4:27 “27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?”
John 4:27 KJV 1900
27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?

What are the implications of women being made in the image of God.

Genesis 5:1–2
1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; 2 Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.
Equal in personhood. Women are not less than men.
Equal in dignity. They should be equally honored. 1 Peter 2:17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
1 Peter 2:17 KJV 1900
17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
Mutual respect means that men and women should be equally zealous to respect and honor each other
Harmony means that there should be peaceful cooperation between men and women. It means that male and female will not try to duplicate each other, but will highlight in each other the unique qualities that make for mutual enrichment.
Unified destiny - We are destined for an equal enjoyment of the revelation of the glory of God in the age to come. 1 Peter 3:7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
1 Peter 3:7 KJV 1900
7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

There is a sin lying at the door of our home ready to come in

Genesis 3:16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
Genesis 3:16 KJV 1900
16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
Genesis 4:7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
Genesis 4:7 KJV 1900
7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
When sin has the upper hand in woman, she will desire to overpower or subdue or exploit man. And when sin has the upper hand in man, he will respond in like manner and with his strength subdue her, or rule over her.
Practical applications in our culture.
We should be “Men of Integrity Building a World of Nobility”
Show respect for our mothers and other women in our lives.
Fifty percent of the growth in population in this world will be female. We should do all we can to help make sure we are prepared to minister to them primarily by helping make sure our sisters in Christ are equipped to teach God’s Word.

Lessons from this passage in relation to the family

Families are God's idea. God's plan.

Proverbs 1:8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother:
Proverbs 1:8 KJV 1900
8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother:
Solomon takes for granted that there are mothers and fathers holding kids accountable. We used to be able to take this for granted as well.
God created man and woman and he created the covenant they are to enter. Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
Genesis 2:24 KJV 1900
24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
The family is God's idea and it is for God's glory.
Grateful to have been raised by a single mother who understood the need I had to have godly male influences in my life. We found that in a church. Men stepped up when my dad stepped out.

Families are God’s primary means of instruction for children

Proverbs 1:8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother:
Proverbs 1:8 KJV 1900
8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother:
Kids don’t come out with many natural skills needed for survival.
They must be taught.
The family is God's school for this huge undertaking—teaching the next generation how to live in this world and be ready for the next.

The foundation for families is a fear of the Lord

Proverbs 1:7 “7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: But fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
Proverbs 1:7 KJV 1900
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: But fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Theme for father’s and mother’s instruction.
Home isn’t just where you learn manners and the rigor of chores. Both important.
The fear of God—the reverencing of God, the standing in awe of God, the trusting of God—is what family's are for.

Fathers and mothers have shared and distinct responsibilities

Proverbs 1:8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother:
Proverbs 1:8 KJV 1900
8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother:
Same theme, different lessons. Same song, different instruments.
Both have discipleship responsibilities.
Example of Timothy’s mom and grandmother. 2 Timothy 1:5 “5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.”
2 Timothy 1:5 KJV 1900
5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.
Many of us are simply continuing in the things we were taught of our mothers. 2 Timothy 3:14-15 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 3:14–15 KJV 1900
14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Children are commanded hear and embrace the teaching of their mom and dad.

Proverbs 1:8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother:
Proverbs 1:8 KJV 1900
8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother:
Two different forms of rebellion are addressed
while at home listen
when away from home do not forsake
Sometimes I give my kids instructions and say go to the other room and.... and before I finish they are in the other room. I get a picture of what is like to have them leave before they have received all I need to tell them.

Children receiving instruction is dependent on us giving instruction

Conviction: Put many hours in preparing to teach you and not near enough into preparing to teach my kids. I would never want to come up here with some level of preparation but have big talks with my kids with little preparation.
We should invest; teaching experiences, personal growth, mentorships, reading (new book communicating to middle schoolers)

Receiving teaching from your parents is a wonderful blessing to your life.

Proverbs 1:9 For they (parent teaching) shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, And chains about thy neck.
Proverbs 1:9 KJV 1900
9 For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, And chains about thy neck.
Not sure my kids see it as being given a gold medal at the Olympics.
Paul refers to this as the first commandment with promise. Ephesians 6:2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)
Ephesians 6:2 KJV 1900
2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)
All the commandments are full of promise, but God goes out of his way to make this clear.

Proverbs 14:26-27 In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: And his children shall have a place of refuge. 27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, To depart from the snares of death.
Proverbs 14:26–27 KJV 1900
26 In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: And his children shall have a place of refuge. 27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, To depart from the snares of death.
Proverbs 19:23 The fear of the Lord tendeth to life: And he that hath it shall abide satisfied; He shall not be visited with evil.
Proverbs 19:23 KJV 1900
23 The fear of the Lord tendeth to life: And he that hath it shall abide satisfied; He shall not be visited with evil.

Conclusion

We have an opportunity to give a great gift to our mothers. Proverbs 23:25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, And she that bare thee shall rejoice.
Proverbs 23:25 KJV 1900
25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, And she that bare thee shall rejoice.
Regardless of your age we should thank God for the role of our mothers in our spiritual formation. Proverbs 23:22 Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she is old.
Proverbs 23:22 KJV 1900
22 Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she is old.
