Break Free

TEXT: 2 Peter 2:19

 

INTRODUCTION: We all have habits we need to break and overcome.

I.          Begin today

A.        Quit telling yourself, “One of these Days”

B.        Delay will only make problem worse

C.        If you wait for a perfect day you will wait forever

D.        Person who wants to change will find a way

1.      If you want to you can change

2.      You find an excuse to put it off

II.       refuse to blame others

A.        You will never break free as long as you blame others for problems

1.      I blamed Elaine for my weight problem

2.      Old as Adam & Eve

a)      Adam blamed eve

b)      He actually blamed God

B.        Must admit that it is my problem

1.      I am personally responsible

Proverbs 19:3 The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the LORD.

2.      This verse says Some … themselves by their addictions and then blames God

C.        Who are you blaming for your addictions

1.      Because of an affair blame wife because she gained 30 lbs when she was pregnant

2.      Because of an affair blame husband because he doesn’t give you enough attention

3.      The devil made me do it

4.      Even blame God

5.      You must quit blaming someone else

III.    examine your life

A.        Take a personal inventory a frank evaluation

1.      Easy to evaluate someone else

a)      It is easy for me to evaluate my wife.

b)      I can tell you all of her weaknesses

2.      We must examine our own life

a)      What are my weaknesses

b)      We say we can’t find anything

c)      We think we are perfect

d)      We are a legend in our own time

3.      How long have I had this problem

a)      Some weakness started a long time ago

b)      I remember going to first state fair all money gone in less than two hours

c)      Parking lot carnival in Little Rock

d)      Penny poker as fun

4.      Where am I tempted the most

Lamentations 3:40 Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD.

5.      Says Examine and Test

B.        To change, I’ve got to stop pretending

1.      We all have some hypocrisy in us

2.      When are we going to stop playing church

Psalms 32:4 For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.

3.      My dishonesty has made me miserable

C.        Admit you have a problem, God will forgive you

1.      Break out with God an yourself

IV.    ask christ to take over your life

A.        Bring my whole self to the altar

1.      This means the good and the bad

2.      Ask God to change you

3.      Put yourself on the potters wheel

B.        Change hurts

1.      Drug addict

2.      Alcoholic (Man in Ardmore)

C.         You can’t change yourself in your own power

1.      You wouldn’t consider heart surgery or brain surgery on yourself

2.      You would go to the specialist

3.      God is the specialist give yourself to Him

D.        Remember, you are controlled by some master

1.      Drugs, alcohol, gambling, the list goes on

E.         We want to give God the problem but keep the rest for ourselves.

1.      Must give God every area of our lives

2.      We’ve just begin to live when we turn our lives over to God

John 10:10 ….I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

3.      God is for you, not against you

V.       keep away from temptations

A.        Sometimes we get into trouble because we don’t use good common horse sense

1.      If you don’t want to be stung by bees, stay away from the bee hive

2.      Example of wasp nest in Arkansas

3.      Old saying, “If you play with matches, you’re going to get burned.”

Romans 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

4.      Recognize what weighs you down

B.        Plan to avoid temptations

1.      Alcoholic doesn’t’ go to the bars

2.      Gambler doesn’t go to places of gambling

3.      Don’t put yourself in the place to be tempted

4.      Counseling I keep distance

C.        Run from temptation

1 Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

D.        We often leave a forwarding address when we flee temptation

VI.    Focus on something better

A.        The bible, church, prayer

B.        What God has is and will do for you

VII. relize you are flesh

1 Corinthians 10:12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

A.        We are all subject to temptation and sin

VIII.       enlist a support group

A.        A friend

1.      Pray for you

2.      Listen to you

3.      Tell you when you slip

B.        Church

1.      Fellowship

2.      Teaching

IX.    expand yourself

A.        Help others

1.      You can counsel others when have had the same addiction as you

2.      When they hear it from someone who has overcome the addiction, it gives them strength to know they can overcome

B.        Get involved in God’s work
