President Lincoln was once taken to task for his attitude toward his enemies.
“Why do you try to make friends of them?” asked an associate.
“You should try to destroy them.”
“Am I not destroying my enemies,” Lincoln gently replied, “when I make them my friends?”

WHO are your Friends?
The people who run in when everyone else is running out.
God may give you a handful of very close friends in life.
Your spouse may be one of them.
Most of us will have 5-10 really close friends in our lifetime.
Friends with the qualities that David and Jonathan have.

Friendship is Selfless.

Jonathan has sacrificial qualities in his friendship to David.
This is a normal, male friendship relationship.
Some add sexual depth to their caring and valued relationship.
Anytime a relationship becomes physical it becomes complicated unless you are married to each other.
David and Jon have a regular man to man friendship.
Jonathan and David Enjoy Sports together.
Most of the time we see them “Going to a field” to shoot bows and arrows, practice with weapons, etc.
Men develop friendship side by side; women develop friendships face to face.
Jonathan gives David one of the few swords in the land.

It is good to stand up for others in tough times.
It is good to stand with others, supporting them in all times.
David probably recounted these tales to young Solomon: Years later Solomon wrote:

Good friends express your value and add to your self worth.

Ten Commandments of Friendship
1. Speak to people—there is nothing as nice as a cheerful word of greeting.
