John 9:1–17 (NASB95)
1 As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth.
2 And His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?”
3 Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him.
4 “We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work.
5 “While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.”
6 When He had said this, He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and applied the clay to his eyes,
7 and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and washed, and came back seeing.
8 Therefore the neighbors, and those who previously saw him as a beggar, were saying, “Is not this the one who used to sit and beg?”
9 Others were saying, “This is he,” still others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the one.”
10 So they were saying to him, “How then were your eyes opened?”
11 He answered, “The man who is called Jesus made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash’; so I went away and washed, and I received sight.”
12 They said to him, “Where is He?” He said, “I do not know.”
13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who was formerly blind.
14 Now it was a Sabbath on the day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes.
15 Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, “He applied clay to my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”
16 Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?” And there was a division among them.
17 So they said to the blind man again, “What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a prophet.”
Everyone say “SEE”

v. 1-2

John 9:1 NASB95
1 As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth.
Lets start with the way Chapter 8 ends and How chapter 9 begins.
Some will make the argument that this is happening immediately after
The picked up stones to kill Jesus, but he hid himself and went out of the temple........ as he was passing by.....
This could be the case. others make the argument that that happened some time later
either immediately or days later, it does not matter. What we do know, its that these events happened.
John 9:2 NASB95
2 And His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?”
everyone say “SEE”
Who’s sin?
So they see that the disciples are looking at this man’s illness/ blindness as a result of sin
The Palestinian Jews back them connected sin with suffering. So they believe that this man’s blindness and suffering was due to the sin in His life
V.3-5
John 9:3–5 NASB95
3 Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 “We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work. 5 “While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.”
Jesus explains that it is not because of sin (his or his parents) that this man is blind, but so that the glory of God can be shown.
We can see here that sometimes God, in His greatness, He allows His Children do go through hardships and suffering to that they can experience God’s mercy and power.
The sweet song of the one who is redeemed.
all the sin and pain in your life, to know you are healed and forgiven (Greatness)

v.4-5

Jesus associated His Disciple with the mission. of teaching the Bible, of Preaching Christ.
We have the honor to join our Lord in the fight for preaching the gospel.
When Jesus talks about “while it is still day” He is talking about while He is here for His earthly ministry.
v5
Jesus reminds them that He is the light of the World.

V. 6-7

John 9:6–7 NASB95
6 When He had said this, He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and applied the clay to his eyes, 7 and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and washed, and came back seeing.
After Jesus said what He said, he began to heal this man.
Reminder that this man, nor did anyone say to Jesus to heal him.
Jesus saw him, and gave him sight.

Why this way??

the question that some of you may have is why did Jesus spit on the ground and make mud, or clay?
we don't know why, but what do we know?
We know that God made man out of the dust of the ground Genesis 2:7
Genesis 2:7 NASB95
7 Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
Jesus: may have used the clay (elements of creation that God used) to make new eyes for this man.
The man washed and came back seeing!!!! There is an immediate change. This man was blind and not has sight.
V. 8-10
John 9:8–10 NASB95
8 Therefore the neighbors, and those who previously saw him as a beggar, were saying, “Is not this the one who used to sit and beg?” 9 Others were saying, “This is he,” still others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the one.” 10 So they were saying to him, “How then were your eyes opened?”
In those times physical deformities (like lime, or blind) were normally the people that would become begger, unable to support himself.
His neighbors were use to seeing him beg that is was hard for them to accept what has happened to him.
Some believed, but others did not

thus the questioning

This is a miracle. There is no way that this could happen.
But just the same this does not stop the Jews from questioning everything.

V. 11-13

John 9:11–13 NASB95
11 He answered, “The man who is called Jesus made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash’; so I went away and washed, and I received sight.” 12 They said to him, “Where is He?” He said, “I do not know.” 13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who was formerly blind.
The ones that are questioning this man is his neighbors
the Jewish elites do not show up
This man gives a account of what happeneds.
‘his neighbors, people that knew of him took him to the Pharisees.

Why did they run and tell the Jewish elites?

fear of the Jews
‘these where the religious folk
they had the power to control the religious community, the social order, and one’s status.

v.14-15

John 9:14–15 NASB95
14 Now it was a Sabbath on the day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. 15 Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, “He applied clay to my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”
the Sabbath! We know how the Jewish felt about the sabbath
The Jews asked again, “how” , how was it possible. How did this happen.
‘they are asking ( I believe) to again make a case against Jesus.

what does this say about the unbeliever?

unbelief always wants more evidence but never has enough
the unbeliever is self-centered
the unbeliever shows pride in their unbelief tells

V.16-17

John 9:16–17 NASB95
16 Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?” And there was a division among them. 17 So they said to the blind man again, “What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a prophet.”

16.

‘this man can’t be from God because He did a miracle, (something impossible, something that only God can do.) There is no way this can be from God because He is not a follower of our religion.
can you see that the religious folk are willing to deny the acts and works of God to keep their own customs and traditions

17

the elites ask him who he thinks Jesus is?
this man says that Jesus is a Prophet
we see here that this man is new at all this. He has not had an encounter with Jesus up to this point.
If this seems to us inadequate we must remember that the man had no way of knowing that Jesus was more. His contact with the Lord had been very brief.
But we see something here.
John 9:18 NAS
The Jews then did not believe it of him, that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the very one who had received his sight,
the need more proof.
‘say SEE!
the blind man speaks to the blind authorities.
you understand that man who was blind was given sight in two ways
physical
spiritual
we can be spiritually blind, not able to see the truth of God. Even if the truth is right before us.
