The value of a soul
Mark 8:31-38 “And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again.
And he said this plainly.
And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan!
For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.
For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?
For what can a man give in return for his soul?
For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father…”
What does God see when he sees your soul?
How does he value your soul?
How does he value the souls of others?
We don’t value our soul as much as God does and we certinly don’t value the souls of others the way God does.
If there is anything I want to do with my life I want to be a soul winner.
Why?
Because I see the value that God has placed our soul.
When I was thinking about this message I wondered what was the highest price ever paid for a precious diamond?
This is what came up.
In 2017 the worlds rarest gem The Pink Star sold for 71.2 million dollors.
Ladied the dress that Katie Winslety wore in the movie the Titanic sold in 2012 for $330.000
Ringo Starr’s Drum kit from the band the Beatles sold for 2.2 ,million dollors
Theres a small piece of card board over 100 years old it has a mans picture on it by the name Honus Wagner .
It’s a 1909 baseball card that sold for 6.6 millon dollors.
It’s the most expensive baseball card ever.
If a diamond can be worth millions of dollors
if a drees can be worth thousands of dollors
If a baseball card can be worth millions of dollors
Then how much is a human soul worth?
Well in 2001 a 20 year old put his soul up forsale on E-bay the biding got up to$400
I know what your thinking that’s not alot of money.
Theres no way I’d sell my soul for that
Can I tell you that people have sold there soul for alot less
people have sold there souls for a few moments of pleasure.
Why?
Because people don’t understand the value of the soul.
What does Jesus see when he see’s your souls?
The Price Paid
Mark 8:31 “And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again.”
Your soul is the core of who you are.
When you die your soul will continue to exist.
Your soul is going to spend eternity somewhere.
It will either spend etrnity in the presense of God or in hell seperated from that presense for eternity.
I want you to look at the sacrifice that Jesus made.
It says that he began to teach them.
This is something that the dicsiples haven’t been taught
He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer
That he must be rejected and that he must die
and on the 3rd day rise again
now why did Jesus just all of a sudden begin to teach them this ?
look with me in Mark 8:27-29 “And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi.
And on the way he asked his disciples,
“Who do people say that I am?”
And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”
And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.””
and in verse 30 he charged the to tell no one about him.
now if i asked you are you supposed to share Jesus with others what would be your resopnce?
I hope that its yes.
yes we are to share about Jesus
but why does Jesus tell them to not say anything?
because they didn’t understand what it meant.
it had been reviealed By God to Peter who Jesus was but he didn’t understand what it meant to say it.
They didn’t fully understand what it meant to say you are the Christ.
They were looking for a Messiah to come and to concore.
They were looking for one to come and over throw the Romans and bring finacl and political liberty.
They were ready to share about who he was so he begain to teach them the truth about who he was and what he must do.
That he must suffer, be rejected and die and on the 3 day be raised again.
Mark 8:32-33 “And he said this plainly.
And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan!
For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.””
Peter calls Jesus aside and said your not going to suffer
your not going to be rejected
your not going to die not on my watch
But Jesus recognizing the voice rebuked satan.
Satan wanted to do everything he could to keep Jesus off the cross.
Why because he that it was the only way
that a man or a women or a boy or girl can be saved.
Is but the price that Jesus paid on the cross for the souls of mankind.
I don’t know about you but when i buy something i try to pay the highest price for stuff.
I try to pay the lowest price possible for somthing.
When i go to buy gas i look for the cheapest price possible.
On our way back from a CR training we were getting close to running out of gas.
The stretch of road we were on didn’t have alot of gas stations and when your running out of gas you don’t look for the cheapest gas.
You’ll pay whatever the price is to get some gas.
Jesus didn’ look at how much it cost to pay for your soul.
He paid the highest price possible for the souls of mankind
because it was the only price that could be paid for your soul.
he paid for it with his body and his blood when they hung him on the cross.
the surrend Required in following Jesus
Jesus says by complet surrender look with me at Mark 8:34-35 “And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.”
when he says to denie myself .
it’s not just giving up something.
It’s saying no to yourself.
It’s say that i’m no longer the dominating force in my life Jesus is.
Those who deny themselves have learned to say not my will Lord but you will be done in my life
To deny oneself is to be aware of only Christ and no more of self, to see only him who goes before me and no more the road whis is to hard for us
All self-denial can say is he leads the way keep close to him.
