John 20:22–23 NASB95
22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 “If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”
1. you can retain another in his sin through unforgiveness
2. by retaining another’s sin you become like them.
Here’s a great principle… forgive and become like God. Retain and become like the one how hurt you.
3. unforgiveness is not changed by time. Its changed by forgiving
warning if you carry hurt you will be tormented.
1. remember God called a wicket servant
2. in light of God’s mercy we should have mercy on others.
3. The prayer of deliverance come after forgiveness.
Matthew 6:12–13 (NASB95)
Matthew 6:12–13 NASB95
12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’
Forgiveness release God to release you
1. unforgiveness gives satan a place to bruise you
2. redemption is co-exensive with forgiveness.
Forgiveness releases God’s forgiveness for others
Forgiveness release healing for you
1. some need to forgive themselves
2. others need to release God.
Luke 23:33–34 NASB95
33 When they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. 34 But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.
Luke 23:39–43 NASB95
39 One of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!” 40 But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 “And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!” 43 And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.”
I’m hanging with you down here, so that you can hang with me up there..
The fact that forgiveness for Jesus was not just an idea.. it was more than just a word but an express to all that ask
I think about, The greatest injustice of all time…. the perfect one is hanging in a place that he should not have been.. In a company that he should not have been. And treated in a way that he should not have been…
When anger would not have just been understandable but acceptable
The pain caused by the mocking, alone could have been enough to kill this man
The discomfort of being at the place called the skull, possible a cemetery, when you are the way the truth and the life. Could have brought forth numbing frustration.
But still he says, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”
Surely in the light of this my offences merely disintegrate into nothing..
If this man who could face so much an remain so gracious.. than i….
Jesus says in Matthew 6:12 the sermon on the mount. The model for Christian living.
Matthew 6:12 NASB95
12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
Forgive us as we forgive. We see here that forgiveness is connected to being forgiving.
One preacher says, “Unforgiveness is like taken poison and hoping the other person dies.”
“When you hold resentment toward another, you are bound to that person or condition by an emotional link that is stronger than steel. Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that link and get free”
4 things we MUST do when offended
1. Forgive (God forgave you) 2. Shut up (Quit talking about it) 3. Release (Pray for the person that offended you) 4. Grow up (Go talk to them)
To forgive we must do 3 things
1. Decide
2. Depend
3. Obey
Unforgiveness bring forth offence
Look with me at Matthew 24:10
Matthew 24:10 NASB95
10 “At that time many will fall away and will betray one another and hate one another.
Let look at the word here offence in the greek
skandalon: a stick for bait (of a trap), generally a snare, a stumbling block, an offense
Now I have heard this quote a lot
You can't keep the birds from flying over your head, but you can sure keep them from building a nest in your hair!
You can’t stop a person from offending you but you can stop the devil from trapping you.
If anyone one should have been offended, its Jesus!!
He’s innocent.. He should not even be on a cross at all.. But there he is hanging.. With criminals.. As they mock him.
But he screams anyways…
“Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”
Matthew 7:1 NASB95
1 “Do not judge so that you will not be judged.
So for one to be forgiven and released from their debt, they must find and forgive other. Judge not and you will not be judged. Now this judgment points to the words in our prayer.
Forgiveness is an act of will. You choose to forgive and not hold on to offence. The feeling will come later…
As you release the person, God release the hurt and healing takes place.
Be like God and forgive.
This is an exercise you can do this week.
1. list relationships of the past that were bad
2. analyze to find reason
3. deal with each relationship and release the person by forgiving
4. you need to ask forgiveness from the person for your unforgiving attitude
there it is!!!!!!!!
