Read: 1 SAMUEL 1:20–28 “For this child I prayed.”

The second Sunday of May is celebrated as Mother’s Day. The founder of this day was Miss Anna Jarvis, a teacher in the primary department of St. Andrew Methodist Church, Grafton, West Virginia, the class her deceased mother had taught. On May 12, 1907, Miss Jarvis passed out carnations to this class in honor of her mother. In this way Mother’s Day was born. Mother’s Day gives us an appropriate occasion to reflect upon some great mothers of the Bible.

This morning, I will be preaching and teaching from the book of Samuel.

HOW DID SAMUEL GET HIS START AS A GREAT MAN OF GOD?

1. His Mother’s prayers—1 Samuel 1:27

27 For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition which I asked of Him. Samuel got his great start from his mother praying for him.

2. She dressed him for the church services, seems important to me. My Mom used to do that for 4 little kids and teach Sunday school.

1 Samuel 2:17–19 17 Therefore the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord, for men abhorred the offering of the Lord. 18 But Samuel ministered before the Lord, even as a child, wearing a linen ephod. 19 Moreover his mother used to make him a little robe, and bring it to him year by year when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.”

3. “The child was young” when she took him,

1 Samuel 1:22–24 22 But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “Not until the child is weaned; then I will take him, that he may appear before the Lord and remain there forever.” 23 So Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him. Only let the Lord establish His word.” Then the woman stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him. 24 Now when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls, one ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord in Shiloh. And the child was young.”

Are we getting the dedication here to God from Hannah? She was so very thankful God blessed her with a son that she dedicated his life, Samuel’s life completely to God.

4. She recognized and her heart was willing to give him to God, God’s ownership of the child.

1 Samuel 1:27–28 “27 For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition which I asked of Him. 28 Therefore I also have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the Lord.” So they worshiped the Lord there.”

5. Hannah rejoiced over this arrangement with God,

1 Samuel 2:1–2 “1 And Hannah prayed and said: “My heart rejoices in the Lord; My horn is exalted in the Lord. I smile at my enemies, Because I rejoice in Your salvation. 2 “No one is holy like the Lord, For there is none besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God.”

Anyone last week rejoice in the Lord? Anyone have any reason to have and realize that you should be “exalted in the Lord?” Anyone last week take the time to praise the Lord because of our salvation?

IN THE NEW TESTAMENT, LET’S CONSIDER TIMOTHY, WHO WE KNOW WAS A GREAT PASTOR.

1. He pastored the great Ephesian church, We read in the book of:

1 Timothy 1:2–5 2 To Timothy, a true son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. 3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia—remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, 4 nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith. 5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith”

2. Paul looked to Timothy for comfort, OK now Paul taught Timothy, loved Timothy but Paul like you and I needed love, support, mentoring also.

2 Timothy 1:4–6 “4 greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, 5 when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. 6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.”

So, where did Timothy get his start knowing God? We just read from his grandmother then mother.............

Are you as mothers and grandmothers mentoring, praying, reading, teaching those in your family to follow Jesus? We are told in this scripture that we are to be doing just that.

SOME OF A CHILD’S MOST SACRED MEMORIES OF MOTHER:

1. A mother is One who really cares for our happiness everyday in our life.

2. A mother is One who really cares for our soul.

3. A mother is one whose bosom gave the greatest comfort in times of hurt and trouble.

4. A mother is The most unselfish person we ever knew.

5. A mother is The blessed doctor in times of sickness EVEN WHEN WE DON’T WANT HER TO.....lol

6. A mother is The queen of the kitchen—none can cook like she can.

THE POWER OF A MOTHER’S LOVE IS TRULY “UNEXPLAINABLE.” NO WORDS REALLY

1. World famous painter—Benjamin West: “MY Mother’s kiss made me an artist.”

2. St. Augustine: “MY Mother’s prayers made me a saint.”

3. Americans may say: “Give us more Abraham Lincolns!” Rather let us say: “Give us more godly mothers!” for Lincoln said: “All I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.”

In all Mothers lives, I am certain there is tragedy, loneliness, unlived dreams, heartache, worry, however, I know in life as I have lived and watched my Precious Mom live her life as the BEST Mother ever during these times in life, I know I am blessed, loved and the Godly man I am today because of her. If you have a Mom like I do, tell her, show her and thank God for her everyday.

AMEN
