6-5, God Blesses Those Who Know And Keep The Book Of Revelation, Revelation 1:9-20; 22:6-21
6 And he said to me, “These words are trustworthy and true. And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place.”
The entire prophecy which John has related.
Characteristics- trustworthy and true
Purposeful- So God can show the seven churches what will take place soon. (connection of tribulation to the hour of trouble referenced in Sardis
Soon- immanent
7 “And behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”
Reiteration of the immanence of His return.
Blessed is the one who keeps the words of Revelation.
What does it mean to keep it?
8 I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me, 9 but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.”
John saw and heard these things (mentioned twice).
John was overwhelmed (Second time this happened 19:10). In both instances, John is told to worship God alone.
Servants of the Lord- angels, apostles, prophets, believers who know and keep Revelation.
10 And he said to me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near. 11 Let the evildoer still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy, and the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy.”
Revelation is for the world to read and hear, so that obedience and worship will result.
Third reference to the immanence of Christ’s return.
The result of people hearing it- some will be saved and some will not.
Some evil people and filthy people will continue to be evil and filthy.
Some will convert to Christ. The understanding is that the righteous will endure and the holy will endure until He comes.
12 “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”
God is full of mercy and grace. He is amazingly patient.
9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
Nevertheless, the day of reckoning does come when everyone will be judged according to what they’ve done.
The wicked will be condemned for their sins.
Those who’ve trusted in Christ, who are redeemed, will be judged according to their faithfulness.
Understand how this works. When Christ returns, there will not be a set of scales to weigh good deeds against bad deeds in order to determine salvation or damnation. Your salvation will be set by time Jesus returns and it will depend on faith or not.
14 Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. 15 Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
Washing robes is an expression meaning to be cleansed of sin.
To have the right to the tree of life means to have presence in the New Jerusalem (21-22).
For this, they will have to have to come in by the gate, who is Christ.
9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.
On the other hand is those who remain outside of grace through faith. These are those who were been forgiven by faith. They opted out, choosing their own sin and worship of self over submission to Christ as Lord.
They are called dogs. This is a first century parallel to us calling someone a “rat.” Scripture uses this term toward unfaithful leaders (Is. 56:10) or homosexual prostitutes (Deut. 23:18).
sorcerers- Drugs were used in the ancient world to dull the senses and induce a state of mind suitable for religious experiences like seances, witchcraft, incantations, and cavorting with mediums.
Those who trusted in the metaphysical outside of God’s truth would remain outside of God’s final kingdom.
The wicked condemned to remain outside the kingdom were those who gave into sexual immorality, murder, idolatry, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood- They all determined that God was not the way for them.
16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”
The prophecy comes from Jesus, by His angel to the seven churches. Jesus lists among His credentials that He is the root of David (the Son of Man) and He is the first light Who shines through man’s darkness.
19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,
17 The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.
The purpose of this Book is to bring redemption to the lost and endurance to the believers.
To all, the invitation of the Holy Spirit and the Church is “Come.”
20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.
The invitation is here for people to taste the cool water of life which flows from the throne of God.
18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
Warning
don’t add to
don’t take away
Both signs of unbelief
20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.
2 peter 3:11-18
11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
Waiting for and hastening
Be holy
Stay true to the Word and do not be carried away.
Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Tell people to “Come”
