Celebrating The Roles of Women
Introduction: We must get the perspective of the vital role we have in God’s kingdom as mothers and women in general.
Problem: Women do not understand how important a part they play in the story of God.
Some reasons: At times, the creation account seems as though the role of “Woman” is a secondary character. Although woman was made after man, she was never just an afterthought. Woman was made to complete man. It was not good for man to be alone.
Scripture says, “Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.” So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:26-27 NLT
Woman was created to help work and tend the garden alongside man.
Interestingly, God refers to himself in feminine characteristics in scripture.
Hosea 13:7-8–Like a bear whose cubs have been taken away, I will tear out your heart.I will devour you like a hungry lioness and mangle you like a wild animal."
Deuteronomy 32:11– "Like an eagle that rouses her chicks and hovers over her young, so he spread his wings to take them up and carried them safely on his pinions."
Luke 13:34 “–O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me.”
In Genesis 3:15, God’s prophecy concerning the Son of God and “Woman” is another look at the important role she has: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
This verse is the foundation of the rescue. The three players in this story are Jesus, the Coming Son of God (the Messiah), the Woman, and the Serpent.
We see the significance of the rescue displayed in the lives of women in the Bible such as Jael and Mary, the mother of Jesus. The woman mentioned in prophecy in Genesis 3:15 is not Eve but another woman, Mary.
Essentially, there are two teams: Adam and Eve by whom sin came into the world in contrast to Jesus and Mary by whom sin is defeated!
Revelation 12:1-5 shows Mary as the “woman” again. It is also said that the woman in Revelation 12 is the global church.
Let’s look at the types of this “Woman” in other parts of Scripture.
We see a similar picture in Judges 9:50-55 when a certain unnamed woman drops an upper millstone on the head of King Abimelech crushing his head! A type of “Woman” working to behead the enemy!
Jael is a type of Mary (Woman) foreshadowing the crushing of the head of the Serpent as prophesied by God in Genesis 3:15.
In Judges 4:17-22 we see Jael crushing the head of the enemies of Israel by driving a tent stake into the head of the Canaanite general Sisera. Both are praised for their roles:
Jael:
Judges 5:24“Most blessed of women be Jael.”
Mary:
Luke 1:42“Blessed are you among women.” Jesus partners with us, His church, to continue crushing Satan’s head everyday we do His will here on earth. There has been an assignment on women and mothers of faith from the beginning of time.
We must understand that:
This is a spiritual war for our identity. It began in the garden with the serpent going after Eve.
It continued throughout Biblical history and into today. God wants to empower and enable His women to do mighty exploits for Him. Time and again He has showed His faithfulness to His people when we obey Him.
Throughout these stories, there is a theme:
The role of “Woman” will become prominent, as their frontline covenant work of bearing the seed and outwitting the serpent comes to the forefront.
Last example:
In Exodus 21, it says that God opened Sarah’s womb. God supernaturally revitalized Sarah’s womb.
And the LORD visited Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah as He had spoken. For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him (Genesis 21:1-2 NKJV).
God blessing us with children is an extraordinary gift. It is through the seed women bear that we can see God’s redemptive hand. Now, it is through our children and children’s children that we are to raise them up to be used by God so the Kingdom is advanced and the serpent/Satan’s work is continually being crushed under our feet.
Romans 16:20 says,“And the God of peace will soon crush Satan underneath your feet.”
So you may be asking, “But what is MY role in the story of God?”
Our role is the same as throughout the story of God. It may not be mighty exploits such as these stories of women in the scriptures. But we all have a part to play:
Our job is to stand in the gap in prayer and intercede, as mothers and women of faith.
Understand we all have an integral role as women and mothers:
Proverbs 14:1 says,“The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.”
Use your vital role as women of faith, by praying for important prayer topics.
