12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: 3 “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”
Today is Mothers Day, the day set aside to honor our mothers. It was back in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson by an act of Congress proclaimed that the second Sunday in May would be set aside for Mothers Day. He declared it as, “a day for the public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country”.
But God long before addressed the topic of honoring our mothers when He gave Moses the Law, and of course repeated it in the New Testament through the teachings of the Apostle Paul.
In one of the comic publications of Calvin and Hobbes, Calvin is standing by his mothers bed on Mothers day and he said “ Hey mom, wake up. I made you a mothers day card. His mother was very pleased and started to read it out loud. “I was going to buy a card with hearts of pink and red, but then I thought I’d rather spend the money on me instead. It’s awfully hard to buy things when one’s allowance is so small, So I guess you’re pretty lucky I got you anything at all. Happy Mothers Day to you. There I said it. Now I’m done. So how about getting out of bed and cooking breakfast for your son. He adds did you notice the part about my allowance?
Obviously Calvin misses the mark on what it means to honor our Mothers. The Word of God commands us to honor our mothers, what does that mean? It seems as though we have lost our sense of honor for mothers in our culture.
What does it mean to honor our mothers?
The Hebrew word for honor means to be heavy, weighty. The idea is to be heavy in a good sense such as honorable, rich, numerous.
The Greek word used in the New Testament means to estimate, fix a value. If you were to look up honor in an English Dictionary you would find it means to have high respect, or great esteem.
So as believers we are to fix a value of high respect and great esteem for our mothers. As you well know our society has lost all respect for God’s plan for the family. However just because society has gone in rebellion against God’s plan does not nullify the Biblical responsibility to honor our mothers.
Why should we honor our mothers?
Because the Bible tells us.
Because Mothers are God’s gift to us.
Because it follows the God’s plan for the family.
Because it is the first command with promise.
“that it may be well with you and you may live long upon the earth”
5. Because of the testimony it shows.
How do we honor our mothers?
Spend time with her.
Listen to her.
Help her.
Love her.
Obey her. (Eph 6:1
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
Mothers are a gift to children, and children are a gift to Mothers.
Mothers be the mothers God called you to be, children follow God’s plan and honor your mother.
One last thing. There are Im sure mothers in this congregation who have lost babies. Those babies are not lost they are with the Lord. May God comfort you this day and may we honor you as well!
