The Qualities of Unity

Ephesians 4:1-2

Paul speaks to the saints about walking worthily in this vocation of fellowship and unity in salvation. He speaks from the perspective of a prisoner of or in Christ.

Here we do not have to guess as to how to do this, for the scripture instructs us in this endeavor and gives us three qualities necessary for true fellowship and unity which the apostle previously spoke about in the second and third chapters.

I.          The three qualities necessary for unity.

            A. Humility (lowliness) – without arrogance. Acts 20:19

            B. Meekness – gentleness of attitude and behavior.

            C. Patience (longsuffering) emotional calm in the face of provocation.

4217 Listening To His Sermons

It was at the close of a Lord’s Day, and Dr. Harry A. Ironside had been busy in the King’s business. Five times had he spoken. On the way home—how human it all was—a simple question of Mrs. Ironside was turned aside with irritation.

The Holy Spirit quickly convicted this man of God. Contritely, he asked his wife’s forgiveness with, “Forgive me. I am quite tired. Remember, I have preached five times today.” And then came the answer: “Yes, dear, I know; but remember, I have had to listen to you five times today!”[1]

II.         The importance of not overlooking the qualities.

            A. Paul calls it our vocation.

We do not simply exist! There is no provision for that kind of a salvation. It is properly our work!

            B. Paul tells us that it is our calling.

We read in Eph.2:10 that we are created in Christ Jesus unto good works.

In Eph.1:4 that he has chosen us in him…that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.

In Rom.8:29 he predestinated us to be conformed to the image of his Son.
