Who is This?

Matthew 21:1-11

Text: "And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?" (Matthew 21:10, KJV) [1]

This entire drama played out as foretold in Zechariah 9:9 "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”

It is said that over 2 million Jews were in and around Jerusalem for the passover feast, on this day.

Out of the enormous crowds, we find that only a small percentage actually recognized Zechariah’s prophecy unfolding.

Does it surprise us that even today with the vast numbers of people in the world, that the historicity of Jesus is met by many with a, who is this?

I.                    The perspective of the multitude. Vs.11

A.    Who is this?  They were expecting a more charismatic person.

B.     Who is this?  This is Jesus.

C.     Who is this?  They were not prepared for the Messiah’ entry.

D.    Who is this?   The Prophet from Nazareth.

II.                  The perspective of today’s Church.

A.    Many do not really know Him.

1.      Their lives may revolve around church but they are practical legalist.

2.      They see Jesus as one of many ways to truth and enlightenment.

B.     Many live in an uncertain manner.

They ask who is this, but we could ask, who are you?

1.      You who live faithlessly.

2.      You who live irreverently.

3.      You who hopelessly.
