Their initial impact on their culture had cooled and they had fallen back on a defensive posture of orthodoxy rather than a loving effort to evangelize.
They were still allied to Jesus and maintained their citizenship in the kingdom but were not reaching out to the world a message of liberation, healing, cleansing, transforming grace in Jesus.
Works motivated by Christian responsibility rather than intimacy with Christ.
The program had overshadowed the Person.

The Answer:
3-fold
Remember - they had gotten to having knowledge without compassion, grace.
But not just nostalgia.
There has to be a proper action.
Repent - Go back to the right thing.
Rethink what is going on.
We see ourselves as we really are.
Confess where we have sinned, turning back to the right way.
It is a change of heart that produces a change of life.
Return - Do it.
Not just a matter of “feeling” loving, but of action in a loving way toward God, the fellowship and the community.
Consequence for inaction: 
Removal of their lamp stand.
They would cease to be recognized by Christ as His body.
The light of Christ would cease to shine through them.

Jesus wants us to love, but not lose all sensibility.

The Promise:

Are we sensitive to the Spirit’s calling and direction in our lives?

Application points:
Effort put into the kingdom - The King knows.
Do we get tired of doing good too quickly?
Do we know enough of the truth to tell when someone is trying to deceive us about doctrine or biblical matters?
Do we accept and promote immorality even in ignorance?
Do we intentionally do the things we did in our early walk with Christ to keep the relationship strong?
At times we become so consumed with serving the Lord that we lose focus on the Lord himself.
We are then set up to become targets for our Enemy.
